Evenrude, Johnson and Mercury are all good products. I have had experience with all three and had very few problems. I would recommend that you buy one that is new or at least less than 3 or 4 years old because the older they are the more problems you will have because the quality has improved dramatically in recent years.

go with a four stroke motor. Japanese motors are by far the best. I sold boats for years and found that in that horse power range any fourstorke will do as long as the weight restrictions don't get you. Try to buy in the first few months of the year as most engine companies will throw in an extended warranty to entice you to buy in the non-peak season. Suzuki was my brand of choice, but anything Japanese will leave you very pleased
