My air conditioner is at least 10 yrs old Its a Fedders window air I can't find on it what size it is in BTU's it fits the whole window. It used to work fine and my place was closed up for three years, my husband passed away and I came back here to live I don't have the money to call someone they charge $50. the first hour and every hour after. I have one of those fix it books, but it scares me that it says warnings about getting shocked even with it unplugged is that true? It starts when I turn it on low air it runs for a few minutes then shuts off is there anything I can try to do? Please help me if you can.

Are you sure that it is not set to "energy saver"? I had a Fedders unit about 10 years ago and it had that feature. It you have energy saver on and the thermostat set on a very low number, it can do exactly as you describe. Make sure you have the knob that is 1-10 set to 10 and look and see if you see a switch for energy saver or something similar. If so, turn it off. Also, I have never heard of an unplugged a/c shocking someone.

Well, it could be that you have a small leak in the system but a technician has to take a look at it with gages. You can check your filter behind the the front cover. They usually pop off or they might have two small screws on the bottom. If the filter is very dirty, it will block the air flow. Filters can be purchased at your local hardware store. Another thing you can try is taking your garden hose and clean the outside coil on the A/C unit. Same thing applies, if it is really dirty, it will affect the operation of the unit. Try it and good luck.

hi, primary air conditioners distribute cool air for the length of a house or construction by technique of ducts that channel the air from the cooling coils to each room. There are also ducts to go back the air to be cooled back. those units are divided into 2 significant elements: a million) An evaporator contained in the domicile that cools the air, and a pair of) A compressor outdoors the domicile that extracts the nice and comfy temperature from the coolant and returns it interior back. Air conditioners are commonly put in in domicile windows. the front section, the section contained in the domicile, contains the evaporator ( the cooling section). A blower blows the cooled air out into the room that the window is in. The compressor is contained in the back part of the unit that extends outdoors the window and exhausts the nice and comfy temperature from the condenser coils to the exterior air. desire this permits. An old air conditioner is really not worth fixing. Once they go, often there is nothing you can do to fix them. If you go to Home Depot, Lowes, or Walmart, they very often have inexpensive new ones, which would be a lot safer for you. I have seen them for less than $100.00.

I just read your additional note. You may want to ask for help in acquiring a new one, or a decent used one. The cost may be worth more than risking your health or life to problems coming from heat stroke.

As far as I know, the air conditioner cannot shock you when it is unplugged.

Good luck!

I need to know what kind of air conditioner a swamp(evaporator cooler) cooler or a refrigerated air?
Find the main circuit breaker and turn the power off.
If it has needs to be filled with water it is a swamp(evaporator cooler) cooler. you may just look for a small copper line going to the unit.
anyway call and ask them

Does both the compressor & fan shut off? You should be able to hear if either is running. If the compressor shuts down & the fan keeps running, you might as well buy a new a/c.

if u are not a really technical person no, and a repairmen would probably charge u 200 to 300 dollars to repair. because your problem sounds like the condenser/evaporator fan and to change this out he would have to tear the unit down.
