In 1579 a European astronomer named Moestlin correctly drew eleven Pleiades. This was before the telescope was invented. Naked eye astronomy would have been easier for him and the Mayans, with no light pollution or industrial haze. There are dozens of Pleiades visible with a good telescope, and probably some brown dwarf stars that nobody has yet spotted. The exact number visible depends on your eyesight.

the clarity of sky, i.e., no light polution so it was really dark, and no smog, helped, but it also depends on your eye sight.. This actually used to be a vision check for the soldiers in many cultures -- if you could see all 7 stars then you have what we now know as the 20/20 vision.. if you saw 5 or less -- you were near-sighted, and if you saw 9 or more you were far sighted.

The Mayans had darker skies to see the stars with. The planet turns on alot of lights at night which dims our view of the night sky.
