You haven't given any figures to work with, but my answer is, "No, low oil pressure is never normal. I have no idea what you think you mean by "spinning a bearing." I suppose you mean that you'll ruin one if you rev the engine. At start up, you shouldn't rev the engine anymore than the choke and gas settings automatically make it rev. The interior parts, if they've set even overnight, will be rather dry and with only the lightest oil film on them. Revving can, and will eventually, cause engine wear. If you're talking about revving the engine when it is warmed up after running for a few minutes, then you shouldn't have any problems as described unless something is wrong with oil pump or the oiling system.
Does this help?

How do you know you have low oil pressure? Have you checked it with a mechanical gauge, or are you relying on the gauge in the instrument cluster?
If the pressure is low with a mechanical gauge, you have an internal problem, either with the oil pump, or the bearings.
I would bet it is a problem with the sending unit, or the insturment panel gauge, but check to be sure!

Low oil pressure is not normal. But how low are we talking here? And if it,s a brand new motor perhaps you should be considering whether you need a replacement engine. It would realy suck to have a new engine blow up on you.

BMW's often have issues with oil pressure in the factory sump, especially under cornering. You might want to upgrade to an aftermarket oil pan to combat this issue.
Try Rondel magazine, or do a search for their site.

Beins as it's new 318. First before you do anything...make sure you put the right amount of oil in for that particular engine...
