What makes us happy? I don't mean in a particular situation, but in general, in life, what makes you happy? Is there a universal cause of happiness?

happiness is what we give ourselves. We cannot make others happy until we make ourselves happy. Only then can we reach the point to say we are truly happy.

I took a course during doctoral program on happiness. Several profs participated as well. A survey was taken and parking passes were thought to being happiness.
I believe that happiness is over rated. I am not much interested in happiness and as a result I am probably the happiest person I know. I have more than I want and a lot more than I deserve.
I think that perspective on the world has an effect as does gratitude. Empathy is a good thing to cultivate.
I know that lots of people have it a lot worse off than I do. I really worry about the person who has it the worst of anyone else in the world. I'm glad I am not that person. I guess that makes me happy.

I make a distinction between Happiness and Joy.
Happiness is short-termed: you found the book you were looking for, you passed an exam, an old friend phones you etc.
Joy is all-the-time-ish: you have this light feeling which means when someone cuts in line ahead of you it barely bothers you, or when someone acts like a dikhead you are kind to them etc.
I think you meant Joy in your question.
Here is my definition:
- you wake up and feel good about it coz it's a brand new day
- you do your day's work without having thoughts like "life sux and i hate everybody" or "everybody hates me" etc.
- you feel good when you go to sleep, nice and happy-tired from your day's activities and are asleep without much effort
