There are many luxuries that certain inmates are entitled to while in prison. For example: you say Library, yes, in fact there was a law that was passed for inmates to have access to a law library so they can do their own research on their respective cases instead of getting gov't issued council, this decreased the habeus corpus cases dramatically as it allowed inmates to do their own legal research. I do not know if a law library is considered a luxury anymore, but at one time, it would have been.
With regards to other luxuries such as TV, Gaming systems; they do have these things because it occupies their time. Remember, idle hands are the devil's workshop (if you're bored, you are more likely to get into trouble than if occupied)
So I do not know if these are luxuries but rather things that keep inmates sane and reasonable.
Many people think that inmates have it great, but the truth is they do not. The state must provide reasonable recreation so that the inmates have some sort of structure in their lives.
Each type of prison provides different types of "luxuries" than others depending on the security level and the dangerousness of each particular inmate.

I don't think inmates should have any luxuries. If you are in prison/jail then you are there because you are guilty of a crime and deserve to be punished. When my children are punished they are sent to their rooms and are not allowed to watch tv, play video games, read books or play with toys. It sounds harsh, but maybe the inmates should've thought about before breaking the law.

These things and more are provided to the inmates at our cost! They should not be allowed TV, gaming systems, movies, anything of that nature.
Each block should have their own time in the exercise 'yard', but nothing more. Yes, I believe the inmates should have access to reading material, but nothing pornographic or violent, and nothing about true crime. I believe that they should be able to eat-intheir own cells, and read, and other than the time in the yard (1 hr?) and showering, the rest of the time they should be locked in their own cells. Maybe we should also increase occupancy to 3 to a room. It would save taxpayer dollars.
Those that are in there for violent crimes, I do not believe they deserve much more than that, if that. But there are those pesky 'cruel and unusual punishment' laws....

I think ANY form of recreation is too much. Remember these are criminals. They deserve no fun or luxury of any type. To fill their "idle hands" they could be put on a chain gang and made to pick up trash along the roads for one thing. Here's one for you, how about having them pick the crops and do the labor intensive jobs that supposedly Americans won't do for below minimum wage. For those who are in solitary confinement, how about "allowing" them to peel potatoes for the rest of the inmates meals?

TV is determined by the guard on duty, the library is open with
very few options.
Stay out of prison, at all costs! No luxuries!

Hey let's beat them within an inch of their lives and put them into a cess pool of filth and let them get massive infections too huh?! Yeah because it's not possible for people to just screw up a little bit and be sent to jail. Some of you people who sit on your high horse and act like they're not capable of doing anything wrong need to wake up. yes they are scum bags and loser in the world, but you also have to keep in mind there's a lot of people in the prison system that just made a stupid mistake and aren't horrible people. maybe your daughter got caught smoking a joint, or you were low on money and wrote a bad check. yes those things are wrong, but they're mistakes and there are very good people who make them sometimes. the punishment needs to fit the crime. and even those who are punished need to be treated humanely.

I think you covered those things right there.

I was 'bad' once, I spent 9 days in a county jail. Some people who were there longer had books, chessboards, things like that. But a lot of these things are brought in from the outside. I'm sorry I cannot be anymore help.
