Follow the speed limit, and be aware of your surroundings. If you are in an area with a high deer population, be on the lookout, and make sure to look at the sides of the roads or into the growth, if it is safe.

The only way to avoid a deer collision is to be aware of your surroundings. At night, keep an eye out for the reflective shine in their eyes. Become accustomed to there shape and silhouette so that you can spot them easier.

But at certain times of the year, when they bucks are in rut, they do stupid things, That's why your see more Deer hit in the fall. Also, there are other things like the deer being chased by a dog or the deer was spooked by something and the deer is running blindly away from the source. At these times there is no avoiding the collision.

Those dee whistles may work but I think only about 10% of the time.

Good question.

1- Don't drive during the winter months.

2- Don't drive in rural areas.

3- Don't paste those phony deer sirens on your bumper. All they do is spook every deer within miles.

4- Take a rifle. Deers can see a hunter 3 months and 10 miles before he/she gets there.

Drive backwards; they be laughing so hard they be rolling in the ditch and stay out of the road!
BUT, on a serious note, most deer move at night, drive slower when in areas of Deer Crossings and WATCH for the Glow of their eyes on the roadside, you start slowing more then, not wait to see if they will actually cross. I been in many situations with Deer, NEVER have I hit one, But, did have one Slide into the side of my Truck AFTER I had stopped, looked me right in the Eye, turned around and off He went all 30 points of him............well, OK, maybe not 30 points, but, every bit of 29! :-D

Buy "Deer Beeper" to attach to your bumper, the whistle scares the deer more than the headlights.

slow down your speeds, and keep your eyes open, the deer's eyes will reflect from the side of the road

honk the horn, then if they don't move, get out and hit them with something.

You really can't avoid it persay....but they get stunned by bright lights...stop and turn off your lights. That has helped me avoid hitting the ones I came across. If you do that, you should be able to slowly move around them without bringing them harm or harming your car or yourself.
