"I am an American. I love my country and have great hopes for it," Depp said in a statement released by his publicist. "It is for this reason that I speak candidly and sometimes critically about it. I have benefited greatly from the freedom that exists in my country and for this I am eternally grateful."

The 40-year-old actor came under fire from conservative talk-show hosts after several English-language publications picked up an interview Depp gave to Germany's news magazine Stern, in which he addressed America's foreign policy quarrel with France, where Depp resides part-time with French model/pop singer Vannesa Paradis and their two young children.

In the Q&A with Stern, Depp says, "America is dumb, is something like a dumb puppy that has big teeth--that can bite and hurt you, aggressive."

While he acknowledges that he can speak his mind under the First Amendment, Depp says he now feels compelled to clear up any misconceptions created by what he labels an "inaccurate and out of context misquote" that was "virulently spreading in the news."

"Taken in context, what I was saying was that, compared to Europe, America is a very young country and we are still growing as a nation. It is a shame that the metaphor I used was taken so radically out of context and slung about irresponsibly by the news media," Depp vented. "There was no anti-American sentiment. In fact, it was just the opposite."

I have no idea what he said, but I suppose I can imagine. Either way, why do people waste their time getting upset at him? It's just HIS opinion. It's not like he's forcing EVERYONE to move to France. He's just living his life and expressing his personal opinion. Who really cares what he says??
