Puerto Rico has been a colony for more than 500 years. First under Spain's rule, later over US rule. The head of state is the President of the United States, and no one who lives in the island can vote to elect him. There is a deficit of democracy in this island and the UN is aware, so how can its citizens join the group of nations and enjoy the joys of freedom? I have my own views, let me know yours so we can make it happen.

Vote to become the 51st state of the Union, or destroy your nation economically by leaving the U.S. confederation.

When Puerto Rico, if ever, becomes an independent nation it will be as poor, or more, as Dominican Republic... and when that, if ever, gets closer to happen 95%+ of puertoricans will move to the US! Only less than 5% believe PR should be an independent nation and is less every single day! The 95%, unfortunately has never come into an agreement to move to the next level, which will be STATE 51...

I am puertorican living in the US for the last five years and I WILL NEVER COME BACK TO LIVE IN PUERTO RICO! the politics, crime and the society are destroying this beautiful Island... and the sad thing about this is that this is the legacy they are leaving their children!

Puerto Rico's status in 1952 changed from a military colony to a self governing commonwealth in a voluntary association with the US. Puerto Rico's head of government is the governor. There is a constitution that was voted and ratified in democratic elections. PR's present status is a temporary one. US has never offered US statehood and the only realistic option is sovereignty or keeping the present association with an enhancement that can go from sovereignty to the same association 'treaty or compact' that they have now. Nowadays, the governing party wants to promote a constitutional assembly to resolve the dilema but accuses the US government of not saying which options that require the will of the US are available(Free Association OR US Statehood, since Independence is a recognized right that does not require US will ).

this summer the governor and governing party said in the united nations that " Puerto Rico must conclude the agenda that had not been concluded in 1952. The Party wanted a genuine self-determination process through a constitutional assembly and the only thing missing was the will of the Untied States"

Right now, we cannot become an independent nation. We have a minority of people that want the independence, but Puerto Rico is not ready for independence. The majority of Puertoricans wants to be part of the US nation. Puerto Rico is right now a Commonwealth in political union with the United States. We have our own democracy. (we elect our own governor, etc etc)

We cannot vote for the president because we do not live in the US and we are not a state, . We have a Resident Commissioner who speak for us.

PD Puerto Rico is a beautiful nation, with beautiful people. Even thou we have our flaws, like every other part of the world, its a great country for living and visiting.

i do not imagine Puerto Rico will grow to be autonomous any time quickly. maximum folk have the incorrect idea that many Puertoricans want independence. even if, maximum Puertoricans delight of their close courting with the U. S.. in case you seem on the elections in Puerto Rico, the professional-Independence celebration continually get carry of below 5% of all votes. Puerto Rico is the most stepped forward united states in all of Latin united statesa. and the people understand this. Puertoricans are very professional-capitalism, i don't believe they need to hitch the socialist flow of alternative Latin American international locations. interior the finest plebiscite Puertoricans voted antagonistic to starting to be the subsequent state, even if it isn't in want of independence. The commonwealth equipment is admired by using the final public.

They can vote to either become an independent nation, or for full statehood. But too many people and businesses prefer not to pay taxes to uncle sam. Besides, most Puertoriccanos live in New York anyway.

by voting for it. but it's not going to happen because puerto ricans are lazy and they do just fine with getting the benefits of being a part, however insignificant, of the greatest power on earth. the alternative (independence) means people gotta work and pr will be just another failed island state. why bother? by the way, do you pay taxes....?
