If it is going to be off for extended periods a of time, YES. If it will be in use and out of use several times a day, No. The thermal stress on the small leads inside the processor can cause them to break eventually. The constant on and off makes the leads contract when the cool down and expand when they heat up. A very constant cycle of this will breaks these leads eventually. If the computer is to be in disuse fro many hours or even days, shut it down to conserve electricity.

I was told by someone in the telcommunications business that if being left idle for longer than 16 minutes it is more economical to shut down completely. Here in cali the pwer cost is so over inflated I turn it off right away when I'm done.

Its all about you. Its not a horrible thing, but I assume it does add to the life of your system not always being on, I turn mine off, becuase I like low bills. But some would say, that computers are degsined to never be turned off, and they run better if you leave them on... I really do not have anything to support leaving them on... its just what ever your needs dictate.

no because you wear out your hard drive from saving everything before shutdown and loading windows on boot up. In windows xp, go in network connections and disable the network card your internet is on when not using it and log off. You want the least amount of hard disk usage for long life without losing your PC to viruses and this is the way to go. And trust me i know this from experience...i used to shut off my pc when i was done with it and i burned out a 120 dollar hard drive in 2 weeks and 6 hard drives before that in a 3 year time period before i had enough, trust me, it sucks losing 20 GB of irreplaceable files 7 times in a row. Hope this helps. ( and no, the 20 GB of files were not burned movies, music and porno, it was 20 GB of home movies, pictures and invention designs)

Not every time, I heard computers were designed to stay on all the time, and that turning them on and off affects them on a negative manner.

I almost NEVER turn off the laptop my dad let me keep with me. A lot of people NEVER turn it off. I mean it's not really a waist of electricity but you know, as well as I'm a child I don't really think it's a waste of electricity but a lot of my friends think it is. (They think it is) Basically, it's up to you when you want to turn off the computer.

we leave ours on unless there is going to be an electrical storm. There isn't really much of a difference in your power bill. You can set your computer to go to sleep after it has been idle fora certain amount of time. It's also less wear and tear onthe power buttons to just leave it on. Those suck to replace.

No. You can set the hibernate feature to shut it off after a certain time period. I have mine set to hibernate after 4 hours of not being used.

Mostly no, it takes a lot of power to turn on so unless you're leaving it for a long period of time (like when you sleep) then it's just wasting energy
