This question can applied to everything in life. My experiences started when I was involved in Track and Field in HS. I worked hard for years, building up my endurance and speed and during a competition I easily beat most of the competitors. When I raced in the finals, there was this kid that ran 1-2 secs faster than me. It was obvious he was a natural sprinter.. I worked hard for years following that to get faster, but I never succeeded in reaching my goal...

I know you all have experiences with others who are naturally better than you at one aspect of life or another, I was wondering on your opinions and your experiences.

Both are as effective in life. One will come handy in some situations as well as the other, however, in the sport scene, natural talent seems to be more appreciated by fans even when mistakes are made.

Hard work and dedication I think. Say you are practicing for something and you put so much work and dedication into it you get better and learn from the experience of practicing rather than just having natural talent and not trying as hard when you are practicing for something.

I think hard work and dedication can get you further in life than just talent. But the three together can get you even further.

About your case: I think that could just have been a one time event. "One race doesn't make a runner." Compare your running records to his after a year and if he doesn't work hard, you will get further.

Some people don't agree with me, but in some cases in sport I even believe as you get older you get better because you have more experience and are more focused on what you doing.

As far as my running goes. I have ZIPPO natural talent(hence my nickname). Any speed I build comes with much time, sweat, and sometimes eye rolling exasperation. However, give me a trail loop and 8 hours and I will work that trail with single minded focus for all 8 hours and come home with a trophy because so many people give up and quit early.

But sadly, it is true that the natural speedsters get most of the glory. But since we have worked SO DANGED HARD for it, it means more to us and we are less likely to blow off our sport.

If you have a talent, you should try and extend it. It is like a muscle: it needs exersize to grow. I have my own example - music.
I was playing piano and everybody says I have talent. I did not spend too much time with instrument exersizing - it was too easy for me to learn and perform. Also I know people who did not have talent but they had dedication. And they spent hours and hours practicing. But at the end when we had to perform on the stage and see who is better - I always had won. So in music i might be different then in other areas.

Hard work and dedication will always win. I have seen too many people with talent piss it away.
