The question is what qualifies? Guitar instrumentals, like what Jeff Beck plays, are start to finish solos. Then there are tunes that the solo is an important but brief part of the whole track. And of course matter of taste and opinion. Too many choices for me.

As a master's student and graduate from both a B.A. and B.M. in music I would have to say that his is basically impossible to make out. We got Steve Vai, Satriani, Vinnie Moore, Tony Macalpine etc. etc. , I like Whispering a Prayer by Vai a lot, because it is both meaningful and well articulated, but really, there is no way of defining the true best one.

I like 'Telegraph Road' with Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits. Great guitar. Whatever is the best, it's by Knopfler or Clapton.
