Tchaikovsky is my favorite classical composer. But what's his greatest composition? That's hard to say. I like "Marche Slav" a lot, the haunting melodies contrasting with the happy cheering section makes for a very interesting piece.

However, I would have to say the "1812 Overture" is his greatest composition. It's an epic remembrance of an invasion. The finale is excellent. If you are so lucky to see a military band they might fire canons as part of a finale. Since it is July, I should mention that it is frequently played at Forth of July Concerts. The song is also used in numerous movie soundtracks.
