I believe a heavy metal 'seed' was planted by Led Zeppelin. Talented musicians like Jimi Hendrix played a hand, but the heavy metal bands clearly chose to emulate the look and sound of Led Zeppelin. A majority of them also contained the same chemistry make-up (vocalist, guitarist, bassist and drummer - all with the 'big hair' look).

Neither Black Sabbath nor Led Zeppelin created Heavy Metal i think that it all started with a little song called "Helter Skelter" by the Beatles. But I DO pefer Zep of ber Sabbath a million times over. I think their style of music paved the way for the hard rock artists of the 80's and is even present today in bands like BLS and even Jet.

No, they did not. I attribute Black Sabbath with that role. If you listen to Zeppelin's self-titled debut, on songs such as "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" and "Black Mountain Side", that's not heavy. Sure, Zeppelin were a big influence (Particulary in the guitar style and arena feel) but, in all reality, they were a blues-influenced hard rock band. Now, some of their stuff is heavy, just not "heavy metal", like "Dazed and Confused" and "No Quarter". I mean, they often experimented, I mean, take the reggae-influenced "D'Yer Mak'er" or the country-like "Tangerine". And, to back all this up, Plant even denied that Zep were a heavy band in an interview.
Sabbath started the whole "metal" scene, with their evil and oppressionistic lyrics and their relentless guitar attack.

i imagine Sabbath were the first team who will be considered Heavy metallic. Led Zeppelin inspired it heavily. a number of the who's early archives and Helter Skelter by the Beatles are all i am going to imagine of occurring earlier Sabbath which will be considered early Heavy metallic. As for who invented it, Sabbath did more desirable than everybody.

Heavy Metal just evolved. It can't be attributed to one single group.
Personally, I don't even consider them to be in that category but they are most certainly a major influence. They, of course, evolved out of The Yardbirds who, for their time, were quite progressive and experimental. Definitely "heavy" in their day. Actually, if you go back to Link Wray, in the '50s, that's where you'll find the first real use of distortion and the all-important power chords. (Not to mention feedback!)
As for the term itself, that can be traced to the phrase "heavy metal thunder" in Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild." (1968)
I would just call Led Zeppelin good, loud, hard Rock & Roll!

the term was invented by William S Burroughs. The music itself is kinda up to the defination of metal. I personally dont think Led Zeppelin was metal, they were more blues/r&B/hard rock. But i couldnt tell you who was either. Try Hawkwind, Black Sabbath. and other such bands.

Led Zeppelin were already formed and were playing Communication Breakdown and Dazed and Confused live before adoring crowds before The Beatles recorded Helter Skelter.
