are there any suggestions for a replacement? I personally am happily married to a very passionate woman but I know a lot of my queer friends are worried.

Political correctness can't win, language evolves but if you subvert it don't be surprised if the next generation fights back in unexpected ways.
"Dude,
that is such a gay question "
Good call!

I think that the "young" have turned being guy into an accepted part of life. Its the "older" generation that still has the issues with it. Also guy as a term for lameness is often used tho, sorry to say.

I am also a happily married and passionate woman.

If nothing else, try readin the Dictionary's definition of the word Gay! Gay as a word means to he happy.

Young people these days need to be educated, open their minds to accept people for who they are. Being gay (homosexual), is not a bad thing, it's just who you are. Don't automatically assume that every gay man want's to sleep with every other male, straight or gay, cos this ain't the case.

Gay people do have certain standards in what they like in a partner!!

I wish that some of the stupid comments on here can be wiped off because some of you think you are being so smart, when your not, your just showing how completely ignorant you are.

Learn to appreciate people for who they are, not what you think they might be.

Yes, kids have started saying 'you're gay' as an insult wich has no relation to their sexuality.
There is a bit of a debate about this at the moment, some people say that it is harmless as it is unrelated to the more traditional use of 'gay' to mean homosexual. But the fact is it was first used as an insult implying that homosexuals, and the reciever of the insult, were weak, strange or at fault in someother way. It was then used in school playgrounds by kids that didn't understand the meaning as homosexual and so it leaked into common language.
It still annoys me because it goes back to when it was used in relation to homosexuals and I think it just fuels homophobia.

I teach, and I can tell you that it is a very common expression among kids from early teens to high school. "Oh, you are so gay" means that a person is naive, silly, foolish, or even mildly iconoclastic. Mostly in the last sense, it is used as a retort to boys who are pestering girls.
I guess you could summarize the expression as an emphasis that a person is "so different." Almost never does it elicit any negative response from the person called it, usually just a grin or a snicker (as if to say, "Thank you for acknowledging that I got your goat!").

i have friends ranging from 17 - 70.
the use of the word gay usually depends on the age of the person using it,
older generations tend to use the word 'gay' meaning 'happy'
most people use the word to mean homosexuals,
teens to early twenties use the word gay meaning uncool, stupid or rubbish. ( i hear this a lot from kids )

a few years back, 'bare' meant 'a lot'
young people are confusing huh?

why do people get upset when words change meaning?

I'm a teen and when my friends use the word "gay" they use it as a another word for - stupid or uncool. They use it to describe things that piss them off (sometimes) eg. "Thats so gay!" As a response to something they don't like. Although they don't mean it as an threat to homosexuals.

1.happy
2.two men having a great compassion for each other
most people use it as the second meaning, but we did not change the meaning, the word always meant that

Well, that would change and ruin the Christmas song, "Don we now our GAY apparel..." I'm guessing the song writer(s) would love to keep the original meaning: happy, festive... instead of homosexual, perverse or any other connotation that is associated with the word gay now...and what about women (and a couple of men) who are named "Gay"? "Gayleen", "Gaylyn" and "Gaylord" aren't totally extinct names!

When I hear people say, "That's so gay", it sounds like to me they mean it's so nerdy or dorky. To me, it's not a real bad disrespectful meaning on the real gay people. Usually it's younger kids that say it, and they don't know any better.
