Like instead of just shading your drawing with an ebony pencil, what method do you use to color a picture and make it look "life-like"?

I have found that some of the less expensive colored pencils do the job just as well as do "professional" pencils.
I start with a light-value color (like a warm or cool grey) and draw the entire composition in just to set up values (pressing full on for the darks, less for midtones and leaving the whites "open") I have found that smooth/slate bristol board is excellent for getting a deep smooth realistic picture.
Just remember to layer the various elements of color to create gradients, etc. as you can't "pre-mix" the color you want to end up with.
...sorry for being so wordy. Good luck!

Use a textured paper, like water color paper...You can also use a instrument called Prisma Colors, a real good colored pencil set. It has many different shades, depending on the number you buy. Also, I use a piece of tightly rolled paper, with a point to shade in colors...always go from light to dark. Your finger works well, but it gets real messy and transfers to the paper. Wait till the last color is in befroe you use black. It takes some getting used to but that's half the fun.

don't color 2 thick with the parismacolors or the color becomes greyed, using a blending stump works well too

Work very very lightly and build up your shades as you go along. Cross hatching of your colours is one way og getting subtle and precise skin tones. Good luck!

You need to get high quality pencils like prismacolors, and blend them while shading.
