Will Rogers was the mayor of Beverly Hills, owned polo ponies, was far more interested in polo than western riding, associated almost exclusively with wealthy and famous people, and his wife's memoirs of him were a classic study in name-dropping and bragging about their affluent lifestyle. He never saw a man he didn't like, but he liked most of us at a considerable distance. (I'm an Okie, and I'm not a traitor! I just don't think he was a "common man", any more than I think Abe Lincoln was a common man.)

He was completely unaffected by his success. He remained the genuine article his entire life. It was through his very humility that he was able to achieve so much.

probably the same reason everyone thinks Bush is a texas cowboy even though he is a rich yale educated yankee.

that's just one book, though...he spoke in plain language, easily understandable to ordinary folk.
