The first day of my last time of month was May 26th (that means I am very late!!). I took a couple HPT's 3 days before my missed period and they came back negative. Being that my gyno is on vacation, I went to a clinic and got a blood test. The technician took my blood and 15 minutes later she came back and said I was not pregnant. I have yet to see my period and I am now 2 weeks late. I never missed a period. Can the results of a blood test be determined after only 15 minutes ? should I wait and get another blood test done by my primary care physician? I really would like to know for sure if i am or not so that I can make sure I am doing the best thing for my body. What should I do??

I am also having nausea, a larger appetite for things I never eat, head aches and soreness. My gyno has not come back yet and I just can't help but to wonder if I am pregnant and it is just not detectable yet. I know that blood test are highly accurate, but is there any way it could not have been done properly?Do you all know of anyone who has experienced the same situation? What was the outcome? Should I ask for a ultrasound? I feel crazy because I have never felt this way before. What do I do?

To be sure, I think you should get a test done at your regular doctor's office. I don't know how quickly a blood test for pregnancy can be done (...fifteen minutes does seem reasonable to me though), or how far along the pregnancy needs to be to get an accurate result. For both of my pregnancies I actually waited until I had missed two periods before I took a home pregnancy test. My husband and I felt comfortable doing this only because my lifestyle was conducive to a pregnancy (my job was not physically demanding, I did not smoke anything, or drink, and I was not on any type of diet). Again, I suggest going to your regular doctor...the blood test will be more accurate, possibly only because by then you'll be more far along. Good luck.

Your question:
I was wondering if there is anyway that I could have gotten a false negative test result on a blood pregnancy test. I have had all of the symptoms of pregnancy such as nausea, extreme fatigue and also cravings such as for chicken and pickles, which I do not like. I also have had no signs of my period coming.
Dr Warhus answers:
Blood pregnant tests are usually very accurate, however they are not perfect. There's a small chance that you got a false negative test result or that the lab made an error. I think that given your symptoms along with the fact that you haven't gotten your period, you should have a repeat pregnancy test.
I also recommend that you make an appointment with your doctor. If the second test is positive, you could begin prenatal care. If the second test is negative, your doctor may want to examine you and perform additional tests to evaluate your condition further. I recommend that you see your doctor soon for a complete evaluation.

stress can change your menstrual cycle.
As for your test, the tests are fairly accurate when looking for hCG or human chorionic gonadotropin
False negative readings (from home kits) can occur when the concentration of the hCG in the woman's urine is below the threshold of detection by the test. This can happen before the 5th week of pregnancy (defined as 5 weeks from the last menstrual period) - beta hCG levels rise exponentially in the first two months or so of pregnancy so the earlier the test is performed, the higher the chance of a false negative result. A blood test usually detects hCG about 10-11 days after ovulation, which translates to about the first day of the missed menstral period.

Yes, they can be determinded that quick. The blood is spun for a few minutes, it seperates leaving a yellow colored serum that is then used, a couple of drops, on the test that only takes a few minutes.
Serum tests are extremely sensitive.
MANY things can effect your periods. Stress, illness, WORRY, diet, excercise, hormone.....
It's not unusual for periods to sometimes get wacky with a change.
If your still worried, wait about a week and test again.
HCG, the hormone for pregnancy RAPIDLY increases on a daily basis and you'd know for sure.
By now, you would absolutly know.
No one has a negative test 2 months pregnant. You have to have HCG for the pregnancy to progress.
Take a look at the stress factors, your diet, increase in excercise or any other issues going on.
Talk to your doctor :)

You usually go to a doctor to find out for sure if youu're pregnant, so i would guess she is right, but I would wait until your gyno comes back to be sure, but yes after a HPT comes back negative you could still be pregnant. Also stress can cause late periods..and you seem quite stressed...There's always a first for missed periods..but like I said, wait till your gyno comes back.

Yes. A blood test is 100% effective. Its something else. It canbe stress or it can be anything. Dont fret, just wait until your gyno comes back from vacay and call for an appointm, ent. but make sure you do it cause not having your period for a longtime does some kind of damage to you. Not sure exactly what but it sdoes.

It doesn't sound like you are pregnant to me. The blood tests are usually extremely accurate. Are you stressed at the moment or have you lost/gained a lot of weight lately? This could cause you to be late or miss a period altogether.

Make an apt with your regular Dr., by then you still may or may not have gotten your period and your Dr. knows you and your body. Stress can do some weird things to the body, try to relax and do something nice for yourself. A second Dr.'s opinion is better than trying to guess yourself if you are or not pregnant.

I would wait for you gynocologist to get back from vacation and get an appointment to make sure all is okay. Even if you are not pregnant something is going on. Good Luck :)
