I think it all depends on how it's installed, and the look you select. Vinyl shakes are very attractive, and vinyl lap siding can look very attractive when paired with brick and other exterior finishes. Hire someone who will install it properly, so it doesn't buckle and come loose. Also, check the neighborhood--some will have restrictions on the materials you can use.
