I have only one experience that I can recall (vaguely) from my childhood, and with very little detail. So I can't say from personal experience.

But I have no reason to believe they work. And plenty of reason to question those who say they do. As in so many other areas regarding good studies of the paranormal, the investigators do not employ scientific methods, which is really the only trustworthy way to learn.

On the other hand, the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal *does* use scientic methods. I've provided a link to them, with an interesting experiment.

A great way to test this, it seems to me, is to blindfold the participants, as mentioned in the Straight Dope link, so there can be no influence (consciously or otherwise) on where the planchette (or pointer) goes. Sounds like fun... and I'll bet you get gibberish a heck of a lot more often than you get words, much less any meaningful message.
