I play piano, guitar and drumms and I pick up things fastly but a friend of mine said it's too late for me to learn how to play stringed instruments. Still I wanna give it a go, just to learn few simple melodies, not cello concertos or something.

If you've mastered the guitar, drums, and piano, then you already know rythm, chords, and melody. Cello should be a snap for you.

The biggest challenge will be handling the bow. When you're used to being "fingers on", on the keyboard, on the sticks, or on the pick, the bow can seem cumbersome, but with practice, you'll get the hang of it.

And, remember, without the bow, you're basically playing an upright bass - not much of a jump from the guitar.

Go for it. It's fun to master something new. You don't have to be the next Yo Yo Ma - if you're happy with the sounds you're making, that's okay.

Good luck! - Stuart

No, of course it's not too late. Yes technique is an important part of playing but nobody is born knowing how to do these things. There's no age limit at all. I started piano when I was 8 but I don't feel that I'm advantaged in any way because of that. My friend started a few years later than me and she's doing great. I think the reason most people are hesitant to start late is that they feel weird about being a beginner in amongst a bunch of kids, but if you can overcome that, then you'll be absolutely fine. As long as you work hard you can achieve anything that someone who started early can. I don't think they have much of an advantage but if they do it's certainly nothing that you couldn't overcome with practise.

It's never too late to take up an instrument. The younger a person starts to learn can many times be offset by the heightened facultys of an adult. I am assuming you are older than 20. You may even find that you have a natural affinity to stringed instruments. No matter what instrument you try, it will take time and hard work to improve. Good luck in your endeavors.

You're never too old to learn how to play any instrument. If you already know how to play some, you've got a head start. As long as you've got the passion for it, try. Besides, guitar is a stringed instrument. Similar rules apply from it to the cello. The hardest thing may be trying to learn to read bass clef music. I had a hard time going from treble clef to bass clef music.

I played piano and drums for most of my life and at the age of 38, decided to put a praise & worship group together at church. No one wanted to play bass, and I made the remark "Well if I had a bass I would play bass for the group". The Pastor was sitting there, went to a backroom, came out with bass guitar in hand and said "Been waiting for someone to play this thing". Took practice, but I can play.
At the age of 40, a girlfriend turned me onto her lap dulcimer and I immediately fell in love with it. We broke up, but one thing I took from that relationship was the love for dulcimer which I bought and play at gigs.
So, if you have time to practice I'm sure you can pick up cello!
