Stay away from the tourists traps!

San Francisco has some of the best food that you will find anywhere, so it's almost an impossible question to answer without just giving you more resources.

Chowhound.com and SFgate.com (go to their restaurant section) are the best places to start.

Ti Couz in the Mission has fabulous crepes.

Vik's Cha'at in Berkeley has the best Indian.

Swan's Oyster Depot for oysters and crab.

Q in the Richmond has good honest comfort food.

Bella in the Richmond (3rd and Geary) has some of the best gnocchi around.

Koo sushi in the sunset (5th and Irving) is amazingly good, and not too expensive for sushi.

Soi 4 on College Ave in Rockridge district of Oakland. You can walk to it from BART and it has real authentic Tai food like Satays and wonderfully fresh ingrediants. Nothing on the menu is over $8. Best to make a reservation. Very popular and a destination spot.

and the winner is........ King of Thai Noodle House. Eight Locations in SF, original 2, and still the best, are on Clement St., one at 5th Ave, the other at 8th. And no, I do not work there, or own it. In fact, I live in New York, but lived in for ten years, until 2005.

Zarzuela in Russian Hill on the corner of Hyde and Union is amazing Spanish tapas. Affordable and always ridiculously good. Take a cab though -- parking is impossible. :)
