After reading numerous questions aimed at the supposed lack of apathy towards the poor and unemployed I am confused. If they were truly sick and unemployed cant they get grants and aid, or other things of the same nature from the government? What is stopping them from getting it?

I can tell you what it's like for a white woman in California who has had health problems for awhile.
First as to gettting a job. If you are limited in your abilities to do physical labor you will find your job choices limited. Employers at office jobs expect you to have 2 years experience and sometimes a degree. So most people don't qualify. Those that qualify are often those that come from families doing better and not needing aid. If you do manage to get one of those jobs, you are asked to do things and put up with things you can't do anyway. Like if you are hired to sit on a stool and run a register, which you can do, they demand that you stock shelves, which you can't do. If you are hired to do data entry, which you can do, they ask you to file, which you can't do.
There are also other obstacles to work, for even more people...If you say you can only work certain hours because you have to ride the bus and hire a babysitter, both of which you can only do during the day, they will schedule you for nights and weekends. If you can't afford a car, you have to pay for public transportation. Alot of people can't afford that either. You may be required to wear certain clothes and not be able to afford it. While some charities help with some of these things, they usually help the same people that are already being helped by other programs. The worse off you are, the less people want to help you. Race is also a factor. People assume that all white people have access to jobs, discriminate in hiring, etc. so employers go out of their way to hire so-called minorities and are less apt to hire whites (in my area). It is still very common for alot of places to refuse to hire women. Some non-white employers will only hire people like them.
As to being sick and needing aid...If you have health problems and need to go to the doctor and apply for medical assistance, they automatically deny you if you are over 21 and under 65. You could qualify for a special program, but have to prove you are disabled. Simply needing medical care doesn't qualify you for health care or disability even though the law implies you do. They always make you qualify in some other way. You have to have something on their list, like blindness or schizophrenia AND be able to prove it. Hospitals and doctors offices used to treat and bill you. Now you have to prove you can pay up front. I have been denied health care for years on end and ended up permanently disfigured on the inside so that certain organs no longer work. And they still deny me disability, however, I can finally get medical care mostly provided by foreign exchange students and others on special programs. It is not the best quality care. 80% of the people in the waiting rooms are foreign now. Not just brown, but foreign. That has to be part of the problem. And again, race has alot to do with it. In California I never get professional treatment or help from black social workers, etc. They are racist and many believe we don't really need help. I will occasionally get help from a white doctor or social worker though, as they are more likely to just see me as a person not some "white girl".
So those are some of the reasons why poor Americans have such a hard time. Other people will have had other experiences.

Too much money is being divirted to illegal immagrants and programs supporting them. Its sad really. I find it sad when go down to pick up my wife from work(public health), and watch as all of these foreigners drive away in mercedes sports cars or brand new mustangs. Somehow they get all the benefits. Heaven forbid your actually white and sick and unemployed. Cause your SOL.
My mother has been sick (bed ridden) for nearly 15 years, and she has to jump through all sorts of hoops for any possible benefits which she finally got just this year. Its this way because we are giving it away to non-citizens and our own people suffer.

And by the way Kathey, not everyone is blessed with good health or a family that can support you when your sick. What hell did my mother create? Was it because she was born? So I guess its all her fault? Your ignorance is appalling.

What are you talking about? I've been unemployed for almost 5 months, I don't need aid or grants. Could be because I'm a true conservative and didn't spend every penny I ever made.

Some people simply create their own hell, and then want the government to bail them out. That is irresponsible.

Because the government allows things to continue to get worse. An example is allowing illegals here with all the benefits of a citizen. If people REALLY want things to change, then people must votes these morons out and vote in people who WILL do something to help everyone else. Since that will never happen, those who are rich will continue to get richer and the poor will get poorer.

The problem is public attitudes toward the poor and unemployed ... the politicians don't see votes in supporting people in escaping poverty or helping people get jobs. They feel they can score political points by poor-bashing and spreading false ideas about who the poor and unemployed are. In Ontario, one politician got re-elected after cutting welfare by 21.6%. What happened to those on welfare? Ask today's homeless.

The poor and unemployed are able to receive foodstamps, temporaray cash for needy families and Medicaid. One must simply apply for the benefits for which he/she is interesting in receiving.

Well, we are running a HUGE deficite in this country, with war and natural disasters, those who make the rules are cutting funding to social programs to fund their own projects. They can still get it...but its harder, and wont stretch as far as oh say, 10 years ago.

too mush sitting around wishing someone would just throw money at them.
