roundup I use it and have 2 dogs and a cat once you've killed the weeds a weekly hoe will keep them in check or if your bored hand weeding
unfortunatly new weeds just keep growing if your looking to keep weeds away for a long time without the work then you will need a weed supressing membrane (most garden centre s stock it)
them a layer of gravel or bark
don't use Sodium chlorate it is poisonness to animals

What type of weeds do you have? Some are tougher to control than others. I try to avoid herbicides but sometimes you just have to use them, none of them are going to keep the weeds away for weeks, though. You need to have good turf maintenance practices. Make sure the lawn is getting enough water. Raise the mower up. You should be mowing at about 3". Fertilize often to maintain vigorous growth. A thick, healthy lawn is the best defence against weeds and will minimize your use of herbicides. Good luck.

The best weed killer is elbow grease. It's nontoxic and safe for animals and . . . will make you look and feel better. Chemical weed killers don't just kill weeds and dissappear, they create chain reactions of species-killing, ground water contamination toxity. Do your share to help our planet's survival by not falling into the trap of using toxic chemicals to solve every garden problem. Not to mention what these chemicals do to you , in your sandals and shorts and to your kids, who roll around those spaces, too. Investigate the connection between cancers and weed killers, and you'll find that the elbow grease looks better all the time.

I use a product called preen, it's a pre - emergent weed killer that's stops the weeds before they can get going, I've used it in my flower beds and my garden. you have to get rid of all established weeds before using it, it won't kill weeds that are already above the surface.
