I would say that northern Italians are more descendants than Italians from the southern portions. Since this was an ancient culture and expanded so far across the globe I would say that most of Europeans and Americans could probably trace their ecology back to the Romans.

Not really. It would seem the Romans were asimilated into the invading population during the dark ages. Like the Etruscans before them, or the Coptic peoples of Egypt, they just faded into the mist.
