Because we are a country full of closed minded people who fear pot as a gateway drug. Give me a break no worse than booze,
make it legal tax it and move on.

Because there is more money to be made if it remains illegal. If they legalize it, the government makes money taxing it, but....if it is illegal, politicians and other forms of law enforcement can take kickbacks from large growers and dealers so they personally benefit from the illegality of the substance.

It also provides an item of leverage our government can use with other countries that grow it. Sort of like when they allowed cocaine to flood the ghettos in exchange for help getting Noriega out of office.

And lastly because the governmentally driven media has overhyped the risks of weed, classifying as a hard chemical in the same category as heroin, methamphetime and cocaine, all of which are significantly more dangerous. So a large percentage of the naive public believes it is dangerous.

Alcohol causes how many deaths a year in this country?
High Fructose corn syrup (or more specifically SODA) kills how many people each year (via obesity related illnesses and diabetes)?

Both of those substances are far more dangerous but were able to gain mass appeal long before the government could stop them from being socially acceptable, so they tax them instead.

way back in the day some people tried to make it illegal with the marijuana tax act which was found unconstitutional in the 60s or 70s at which time the government created the controlled substance act that is in effect today. the original reason was to control the minorities. I think they have continued it so as not to look bad in the eyes of the people, but who really knows why the government does half of what it does. there is no reason to keep it illegal there have been studies showing it to be less dangerous then cigarettes or alcohol. it does make you dumber for the whole entirety that your high kinda reminds me of somethin else oh yeah alcohol seems to make me stupid while im drunk too hmm maybe we should ban it. there have even been studies showing it stimulates neurogenesis which is the birth of new neurons. there will be people to post on here just repeating the bull that the government feeds us. my suggestion is to do some of your own research and write your senators congressman who ever will listen if you want it legalized.

Because some people feel that it is a 'bad' thing. It is definately on it's way to being legalized though, my husband could debate with just about anyone on this subject for ever, he feels very strongly about the legalization of marijuana.

because if it were legal it would cripple agriculture. That is what is going on in a lot of third world countries. Think about it. If you're a farmer are you going to do all that hard work to grow corn or cotton and get pennies or grow weed where one plant can be worth thousands of dollars.

If weed were legal nobody would want to grow food anymore. All the farmers would start gorwing weed. Just like in Afghanistan where they can't get the economy going because they can't convince farmers to stop growing Opium.

Would you want your children driving around with a bunch of careless pot heads? Nothing against it, but too many problems will come of it because too many people are careless. It's far from being legalized for personal use, medical use stands a much better chance.

Because it is a drug, and the last I checked we are in a war against drugs, just like a war against terrorism, and a war against any countries that have what we want, and a war against our own people cause we can't elect proper leaders (2000 Florida scandal).

Mostly cause it is a drug that scrambles your brain!
