Okay, I am pregnant with our second baby, and we have two cats. I am really afraid of toxoplasmosis because it is a nervous disorder that unborn children can contract by the mother cleaning or being around cat feces. My husband knows about this and the effects it can have on our unborn child.....

I already said that I am about 8 weeks pregnant and the smell makes me really queasy and miserable. My husband always makes a big deal about cleaning it out and says that I am being a pain in the ***.

This morning I woke up at about 6:00 to the smell and it was so bad I couldn't even stay in my bed, I very nicely asked him if he would take care of it for me so that we could go back to sleep and he argued with me over it for nearly 10 minutes and then cussed and got up and made a huge deal about it. What I don't understand is why he is being such a jerk about it, I would do it for him, and I took care of it 90% of the time before I got pregnant the second time. What do you guys think?

Why he's being a jerk is anyone's guess.
Have you considered getting a Litter Maid? They are a "self cleaning" box that scoops the poop and urine into a bin which then closes.
My son and his wife have one for their two cats. He only has to change the bin about once a week.
Granted the system isn't cheap, but may be worth the investment because you're right toxoplasmosis is a devastating disorder and in early pregnancy can also cause miscarriage.
Good luck with your pregnancy, and give the kitties lots of love since it's doubtful he pays any type of kindness or good attention to them.

Maybe you need to find a place for the Cats to live until you give birth if it truly concerns you that much. Maybe even one of those self cleaning cat boxes that wipes the tray a couple of times a day when the cat gets out of the box.

As for people that think Men are pigs like something mentioned already I bet she is a piece of work and has not had many dates or has ever been able to hold any mans interest long. Anyone that could call all people that are male pigs does not get out much and it is no wonder why with a mouth like that.

One question. Do those cats belong to him? Or are they yours. You have reasonable concern. See if a family member would not mind keeping the cats until after the baby is born. Assure him that they would be well cared for and in this way he does not have to clean anything. You must remember that a lot of things don't bother most men because they do not have to deal with the things women deal with. Some can live in total filth and be very comfortable with it. I had a friend who throw up every time she got around strong smells. ( Yes she was pregnant)

We have two cats, but they are indoor and if you have had them for quite some time, you may have an immunity to the toxoplasmosis. Also, if your cats are indoor ONLY, then you are at an even less risk. Not always, but on occasion, I cleaned out the boxes; I wore a mask and gloves and have had no problems. Up to you if you want to take the risk, however, if your husband doesn't want to clean it up, then maybe you should consider one of those electric boxes and then maybe paying someone else to come in once a week to clean it out. Plus scoopable litter works so much better than plain clay litter.

Good Luck

If it were up to me we wouldn't have any damn cats. Our youngest daughter is 12 and my wife hasn't cleaned the litter box in 16 years. What a crock. Meanwhile the cats ruin our carpet whether the box is clean or not. When these cats croak, we are DONE with cats. I hate them. But I wouldn't kill them.

So I'm afraid I'm on the fence here. I don't think you should off the cats b/c you're pregnant, but if you could find them a home or sincerely and honestly promise your husband that you'll take over the cat box as soon as the baby is born, then he should help out for awhile.

I'm just screwed.

This is my reply from an answer you left on my question "yay or nay":

You said:
Who is anyone to judge whether we are better than any other country or not? Has anyone that is answering this question ever been to every other country in the world? I seriously doubt it, and if you answer this question without the knowledge to back it up then you are just an ignorant fool.

This is a question about peoples opinions. I personally have travelled and lived in many places in the world, and I enjoy the multitudes different cultures entangled here. Dont make ignorant assumptions that you derived from your pitiful life, around stinky cats, lazy husbands, and trailer parks. You obviously do not enjoy being american, because you are not living the "american dream" as many foreigners have come to live. Uneducated trailer trash, Analyze questions, and then brainstorm your answers before you blot out shortminded remarks. Just a little thought for your low grade uncultured self. Enjoy!

I had this same exact problem...with my ex-husband and my 2nd child AND with my current boyfriend with my 4th child.

GET RID OF THE CAT.
I was very concerned about this too. My doc said one or two times isn't going to hurt. Obviously you don't want to be smelling the feces all the time etc.

I'm not really an animal person so it was an easy decision for me with my ex because I got rid of the cat. Now with my boyfriend, I asked him time and again and he still didn't clean the box...so one day while he was working on one of the cars in the driveway, I blatently took the entire cat box, all of the cat toys, the cat food, the dish etc outside and set it at the edge of the driveway. I told him that he can clean it at his convenience, but it isn't coming back in the house. Happy for me....the cat still lives outside.

I think if you're this convinced of the seriousness of the problem and it's causing you to be sick then I woiuld suggest to him, no wait ... tell him, that if he wants to see the cats stick around then find a better solution to the problem or the human society will be getting some new felines to board.
