I have a proposition for you. If minimum wage is a substantial enough wage to live in America with rising inflation, a widening gap between poverty level and the upper class with the diminishing middle class, then I challenge all upper class citizens to live on minimum wage for 3 months and giving up all luxuries with 2 weeks advance pay and then come back and tell me if the minimum wage should be raised. If people have more money to spend, the purchasing power becomes greater, thereby strengthening the economy. Also you must factor into this equation that not one pair of Levi Jeans, for one of many examples, was made in America last year. Still, the number one market for the jeans is America. In just that one example, one can see that the economy was stronger 50 years ago when the same people were being paid fair wages for honest work and were also the people buying the products. Obviously, you can see how money circulates in an economy that is strong. Then, big business had laws preventing selling American jobs to foreign countries to fatten pockets of the big cats while taking food off of the American worker's table. Put that in your conservative pipe and smoke it. Undeniable facts.

Because their power base is the people whom they keep dependent. Raising the minimum wage would do what? Cause more illegals to be hired and place more people on welfare. And who do you find on welfare? Democrats.
Besides, what should this new "minimum" wage be? $10/hour? Why not $100/hour? Why not $1,000/hour?
Now, let's say that the minimum wage was raised to whatever you think is "fair." What do you think the employer will do? That's right, raise the prices of products and services to cover the cost. Who pays that cost? That's right everyone, including the people working for minimum wage. So what have they gained?
Minimum wage is for entry level jobs. If you want to promote mediocrity, then by all means raise the minimum wage. Productivity would go down, prices would rise and you'd wonder why things cost so much and service is so poor.

Because it's the decent thing to do. One cannot eek out a living on such meager wages unless you're pulling down two jobs. I've heard all the reasonable (and unreasonable objections) to raising the minimum wage though the one indisputable reason is simple: people deserve to be treated fairly and considering that minimum wage jobs are among the most demanding (and demeaning) granting employees an opportunity to live a life just above poverty is hardly too much to ask from any employer.

Oh come on.... *** hole? Is that really what you think? You realize by that response... there is no limit on minimum wage to you, is there? Ok, lets help out the poor work force starting out, lets make the pay scale up to a nice livable rate. From now on, lets m,ake minimum wage, oh, I don't know... $35.00 an hour! Is that good for you? Cool, now you can raise a family on that by working at McDonald's! Fine! What the hell do you think that burger is gonna cost? You really think the employer will eat that cost? No, they pass it on to you the consumer! It's that simple. The more you raise the minimum wage, the more the cost of goods gets passed on to you. Okay? So, $8.00 an hour sounds better to you? Fine. Now your ice tea is $2.50 to $3.00 a glass. Then what happens? Yes. All the people who cheered for the minimum wage increase are screaming we can't afford an ice tea anymore! Let's raise it to $10 an hour!!! Yes, they don't get it either! So how do we fix it? Get an education, realize it is only a starting job with a starting salary, and MOVE ON!!! Don't stay there complaining you can't live off of it! Get another job that pays more. Move up in the work force. That's how it works!

Well since you asked in such an objective way, it doesn't really seem like you want an answer that might actually enlighten you. So why should the rest of us bother? It's like talking to a kid that's yelling "LA LA LA LA!"
But I'm gonna give you an answer anyway, in the form of a question.
Why do you think it's ok that Wal-mart, being america's largest employer, gets to make tons of money (to the tune of 10 billion a year in profits), while at the same time paying their employees minimum wage that does not actually support their families? These families actually qualify for welfare while working full time. Do you think it's fair to the rest of us to basically subsidize Wal-mart's profits?
My guess is that these "evil liberals" you speak of want to change that. And until you live the life of a person who has to get by making minimum wage, you have no standing to say a thing.
Be glad you were born into your life of luxury where you can make sure grandiose statements in the form of a question, and get fat off of other people's labors. I hope for you soul's sake one day you will awaken.

why do the evil rich people not want to raise minimum wage? what do you have against hard working people making a living freakin' wage? you can't be procapitalist and proworker at the same time you want to keep wages well below the poverty level. Anyone telling you that raising min wage is bad is profiting from the slave labor of Americans.

Because the majority of the "new jobs" that the republicans are crowing about pay minimum wage and no one can live on minimum wage when the government takes half the money that you make in taxes.
A minimum wage hike would not be necessary if our government wasn't so wasteful in it's spending which necessitates the excessive taxation.
End welfare & food stamps = less taxes for us
End funding to 3rd world countries = less taxes for us
End the practice of being the world police = less taxes for us
End the war on drugs = less taxes for us
Purge prisions of "victomless" criminals = less taxes for us & the violent offenders have a place to rot for the rest of their lives instead of getting time off for "good behavior"
Live and let live people

I personally think raising the minimum wage would help - and I am not liberal. We have too many in our society who cannot even claim to be part of the middle class.

I'm not a liberal and I believe there should be an increase, just for the record. Hardly anyone works for or is paid minimum wage, but for those who are earning it, it's time it was raised.
How it will hurt the economy is just another smoke screen.
