i love SF.
dont know about hotels, but definitely check out pier thirty nine, bubba gumps, the rain forest cafe, hard rock cafe, the embarcadaro, and there are tons of shops and seafood on the embarcadaro.

There are some hostels here. As far as cheaper hotels - there's a travel lodge near market and Van Ness - not a really fun spot, but it's minutes away - if your a gay man Beck's - if not it wouldn't suit you.

If you stay in the hotels/motels on Lombard (not the curvy part, the end towards the marina) they have lower rates than downtown hotels.

The public transportation is excellent if you're visiting (I't s a bit less excellent if you live here and are carrying groceries and stuff). They have 3-7 day transit passes depending on how long your stay is - a monthly is $45 if you'll be here 2 weeks or more it might be worth it) that cover busses in SF.

Walk down Jackson Street in Chinatown - it's not full of touristy shops but rather grocery stores, fruits and vegetables you've never seen, fish flopping in tubs, you can still buy a live chicken if you know where to look. It's pretty cool - crowded with Chinese ladies. Most tourists never see this.

The Haight is fun for people watching and it's next to the park, the conservatory of flowers in the park is newly restored and Only $5. The Japanese tea garden can be crowded and not very restful, but it's pretty.

The Asain Art Museum is fairly new too, it's nice they recommend starting top-down - though when I finished I wished I had spent a bit less time on the top two floors (a lot of Budda's and such) so I would have enjoyed the ceramics and stuff more, but a nice museum. (We don't really have great museums like Europe or the East Coast, but good).

It's a very pretty place, try to take in some scenic beauty while in the area.

If you are going to Alcatraz get your tickets a few days early, and you will be tired after a day of hiking all over it.

Bring comfortable shoes and a light jacket, you will need both.

Have a great time on your trip, it's a wonderful place to visit.

BUDGET hotels in SF??? stop, youre killing me. you will have to go to the east bay or to the peninsula(like redwood city maybe) for a somewhat reasonable hotel. hey try the ymca or ywca. public transportation is not bad in SF with bart or muni- oakland is not bad with ac transit. peninsula is ok during the week but can be a little sketchy on the weekends. all the tourists go to pier 39 and ghirardelli square. the sourdough bread has become a bit tasteless and overpriced. ride the cable cars from the turntable at ghiradelli, but be prepared to wait at least an hour. its still lots of fun. bring tons of money
and at least a light jacket unless you go in september.

Make sure to go to Ghirardeli (spelling might not be correct)Square and get a ice cream sundae with hot fudge!!!! Absolutely amazing!!!
The market down there near the pier is great during the day. Lots of great vendors with awesome food!!

All the shopping is great there!! But, expensive! 8% sale tax even on clothes.

Very tough walking! but, with all the great food there, you will need to burn off those calories! Make sure to ride the trolley!!!
