why do people tell you they have good news and bad news what do you want first...? does it really matter which one I take first.. Which do you choose first...
does taking the bad first give you something to look foward to or does the good makes you forget all about the bad...? What is the point, don't you have to hear both no matter what you choose?

Yes, you do have to hear both no matter what you choose. It is in the self conscious mind that people believe if you hear the bad news first you will be over wrote with the good news. But some times the bad news should be told after the good news because it gives the person a chance to understand it. With good news being told after the bad will confuse the thought or meaning you were trying to say before you said it.

I always ask for the bad news first, I guess it's so I have something to look forward to. You're right, it shouldn't matter, bad news is bad news no matter what. But if I were to hear the good news first, I wouldn't be able to enjoy it because I'd so be dreading the bad news.

Bad first. Then the good news makes you feel better. It takes off the edge from hearing the bad news.

I think it's just a way to ease into a conversation, knowing that some of it isn't going to be pleasant to hear. And which would I want to hear first? Depends on the person bearing the news and the situation.

Good question, it'll be intersting to see the responses you get.
Personally, it makes no difference to me which I receive first. I think asking that is probably just an icebreaker to let someone know that there will be bad news either way.

Great question...now the answer, do you want the good answer or the bad answer first? Just kidding, I agree with all you said.

it's just for balance....where there is good - bad is also there. At least it's nice you get to pick which one you want to hear first.

there are people who would rather hear the other thing first to prepeare his/herself to the reality. can't blame them. good news: this is really common. bad news: this is the truth.

You're right. It's just people trying to be "cute" or interesting. It's a very old conversational ploy to get you interested in whatever they want to tell you.
