A fire extinguisher appropriate for a flammable liquid fire is one rated to extinguish a class "B" fire. The international symbol for a class B fire is a picture of a gas can with a flaming spill next to it. (See link below). If the unit is not rated for a class "B" fire then it is not appropriate for use on a flammable liquid fire and could in fact make the fire worse, as some have stated.

As far as the color of a water extinguisher, most are chrome or metallic looking and are not painted. However, this is typical of water based units and a foam fire extinguisher is also water based, often in a chrome container, and is appropriate for a class B fuel fire. Similarly, the Class "K" kitchen fire extinguisher is also often in a chrome container and is suitable for kitchen cooking oil fires.

You are talking the A fire extinguisher. Pump up water or old soda acid. they will just spread the flammable liquid fire.
Color of liquid in pump up type is clear water. old soda acid ones liquid looked milky form the soda and acid mix.
