Was it Son-Rise: A Miracle of Love? This was an NBC made-for-TV movie about a 3 year old autistic boy named Ruan. The mother (played by Kathryn Harrold) who had severe autism. The mother stayed home with her son, rocked back and forth in front of him and eventually brought him into the real world.

This led to the creation of the Son - Rise Program for Children with Autism.

This sounds more like a tv movie with Cloris Leachman. The film is called "The Woman Who Willed A Miracle. It's about a elderly woman who is given care of a young child who is blind and mentally challenged. With her love, she manages to get him to care for himself. He also develops the ability to play the piano after listening to concerts he hears on television.

This is based on a true story. Hope this is the film!
