I read something on this years ago, it's both interesting and sad at the same time.

There isn't much joy in being poor so a child is usually the only joy in a poor persons life. Also, remember contraception costs money and you need to be responsible enough to use it too.

If you are uneployed or underemployed, you have a lot of extra time around the house. Sex is great entertainment. If you have a job, but are living below the poverty line, you probably don't have a lot of money to go out for entertainment or gas money. So...

Also, someone living below the poverty line probably has a different outlook on their life. The live for today mentality probably rules. Why? Because there is a lot of uncertainty, you never know when you're entire situation will change.

Another thing to remember is that although it is a difficult process, the State does provide assistance for children and families in poverty.

I would hardly want to live in a society where we let those less fortunate starve, but we do enable people living below the poverty line to support their children.

In other countries, this practice has historically been to support the parents in old age, help with the labor as well as making sure that enough children will survive diseases and disasters to become adults.

Because they are not intelligent enough to put thought into it. Or maybe they are: More kids = Bigger welfare check. It's a way of life for lots of people. I guess the real question is why does the government support these people - infact almost encourage it? Heck, I might start pumping out kids too - I want to do nothing and get paid also!

The "poverty line" is a artificially generated demarcation that does not describe anything that happens in real life. In case you haven't heard, the human sex drive seems almost irresistible and undampable to the exclusion of even food and water and shelter. Trying to fight one of the most basic of all biological drives by drawing a line across an accounting table is futile.

Lots of reasons:
1-it feels good and very little else in their lives feel good
2-it gives them a sense of closeness to someone (being needed by someone/comfort etc)
3-they can't afford birth control or are ignorant to it or listen to religious leaders (less educated/poor people tend to be more religious) who tell them condoms are a sin
4-it's free entertainment
5-it has become part of their sub-culture
6-they are human
7-some want a baby to love/be loved by w/out understanding the responsibility
I'm sure there are more I'm not thinking of...

I have to agree with Angela B on this. Unless you can give some statistics on this, I'm having a hard time believing you even stated the question.
Besides, poor people aren't allowed to have sex? Do you think they should get your permission first? Only rich people are? That's news to me.
It's very easy for you to judge when you don't know someone's situation. The birth mother of the boy we're adopting is in this situation. Since we cannot conceive, we see this little boy as a gift to us. If this woman had not given birth to him, we would not have him in our lives.

i live in a country where 85% people are under poverty line. you people are using ur logics but i have the fact. many children means many working hand, these children either dont go to school or even if they go to school they work side by side with their parents when they return back. their is a joint family system. any one who earns bring it to home and use it collectively no matter how much they earn. in poverty if a man has no children he becomes more poorer.

Why do people above the poverty line have spandex and ten speed bikes that temp those below the poverty line to run them over and laugh?

I'd hate to spoil your little party.

In the US, welfare benefits are limited after so many children.

Studies have shown that less than 5% of children in welfare families were born while their parents were on welfare.

Why people want to engage in this talk is very difficult for me to understand ... particularly when it is likely that the asker has not been in the shoes of those he or she is attacking.
