so this is kinda a two part question...my computer is really slow. its only like 3 years old, i have a fiber optic connection here, but its still slower than it should be. i have adaware and spybot to get rid of adware and i defragment regularly but nothing seems to make my comp go faster. i have a lot of audio and video files on my comp, would that slow it down? thats why im considering an external harddrive, so i can save everything to that and still keep my comp fast unless somebody computer saavy has a better solution. i think a external drive would be good to keep movies and tv show seasons on anyway, instead of just keepin here. whats a fair price to pay for one and what brand is the most reliable?

I would get a flash drive from wal-mart. I recently bought a 512 Mb Sandisk brand for 35 dollars. that should be enough space to save most of your audio files.

You may get a slight speed increase if your hard drive is nearly full.

Your plan to use an external drive is a good one.

I saw a Maxtor 200 gig today at Sam's for $110. They had a 120 gig too and I think it was $79 but I am not positive.

I assume you are running XP. If I were you I would try to increase my memory. I went from one Gig to two & it made a big difference. If you have less then a Gig you might better spend your money on memory.

Good luck. Either will benefit you.

Like some other people might say, 3 years is a long time for a computer, the only way to speed up a computer is to (1)add more system memory, (2)Upgrade to a faster CPU, (3) Upgrade to a newer, faster graphics card. I would go for a 2Ghz CPU at least, 1gig of system memory at least, and a GeForce 6600 from NVidia.

Have you ever reformatted your hardrive? No matter how good care you take of your machine, periodic reformat is necessary.
If you do get external HD, consider getting backup software like Norton Ghost or something similar.

Need to upgrade your RAM and delete old unused files/programs from your system.
Visit www.dabs.com for variety of USB external hard drives with their spec and prices. Good luck!

well, in computer terms, 3 years out for any computer is a pretty long time, I'm not surprised it's slow. You should probably get a newer computer.
