Our government is designed so that people are better off not working. My best friend is a single mom. She is supposed to be getting $400 a month from her daugher's father but he's "not working". They still take her child support into consideration when it comes to calculating her income so she can't get medicaid. She was cut off in the middle of her cancer treatments last year because of new restrictions on Medicaid made by our wonderful Missouri Governor Matt Blunt. The people at Family Services actually told her she'd be better off not working. She does anyway as a part time bartender and a full time business owner because she's not one of those people who thinks it's ok to live off of other people's taxes.

We give money to people who are unemployed with children in order to keep them off the streets. The problem is that the very act of giving the aid sometimes reinforces the behaviour that caused the need for aid in the first place. So, it's a Catch-22. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
What we can do is encourage personal responsibility and good decision-making in other ways, like the semi-successful welfare-to-work programs. This appears to be about the only humane way to extricate ourselves from what has clearly become a very undesireable situation.

I take offense to that question I was and am currently on Welfare for food stamps. I started getting it when I was working. Some people just need a little bit of help to get back on their feet. I have a average paying job, its just that the cost of livng is high and some people have to do what they got to do to survive. The question you should asking is why do we support people who take the welfare money that comes out of my taxes and go buy their drugs with it or sell food stamps to get their fix. If you know about the system you would know that they make you find a job while you are on social services or before you can even get that first check.

That is an easy question, who wants to work, if you were given the choice of not working and getting paid for not doing so, instead of having an obligation of waking up everyday from 9 to 5 - which would you choose??? I think most people would stay home.. I am a paralegal and the fact of the matter is that I would love to stay home and be getting paid for it., but unfortunately the welfare money for ME it is simply not enough to make ends meet for my own living arrangements, but others do not feel that way.. AND, furthermore, the government is the one approving of it., who does not take free things??? NOBODY... THAT IS THE WAY OF LIFE... SO, WE WILL ALWAYS BE SUPPORTING THOSE WHICH CHOSE NOT TO WORK AND BY THE TIME THAT WE WANT TO RETIRE., WE WILL BE SO OLD THAT WE WILL NOT EVEN ENJOY IT!!!

ok, i work for a non profit agency that fixes up homes for free for low income familys and I can't tell you how many people tell me that Job and Famly Services caseworkers have told "Just have another baby and you'll qualify for whatever you need!"
it's happening because we (meaning the government) are letting it. If we stopped paying for everything for them and giving them free stuff for each illegitimate baby they pump out they would either stop having them or start using the adoption process. right now as it stands if you are on welfare and you get a job you loose your assistance so it's easier to just stay home. i see that all the time at my job. daycare is too expensive and they aren't educated enought to get a real job so the wages they get are the same or less than what they would have gotten from welfare.
I personally feel that college or job training should be mandatory for anyone to get welfare payments. that way when the 3 years of payments are up they can take care of themselfs.

Because we are all humans and in the end you will feel good about yourself.
Put yourself in their shoes and have to live with that. Little money doesn't take away your privalige of having a baby.
Also, maybe they live in third world countries with no work! What can they do about it.
Doesn't it just make you happier to see a child smile? Imaging a whole family being happier because someone cares.
You can't help where you're born or what family you are born into, but in the end it will look good on your life resume!

because life is complicated and sometimes people need a little help. you make is sound like people are getting paid it sit on their asses and get knocked up over and over. I've never been on welfare but i don't think that I'm above people who have needed help in life. maybe not everyone has had the opportunities that you've had, maybe some people live a hard life. get off your high horse.

I take offence to this as well, I am on medical card and so are my kids, We take care of ourselves but when it comes to paying rent or getting a check up for my child that is just not fair..Some of us need help with medical when our jobs just do not have health insurance. This makes me trash? I am sorry that not all of us out there can not afford everything when we are starting out with nothing!
