Giving people money is not the answer. "Give a man a fish, and eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he eats for a lifetime"

They should be doing the jobs the illegals are doing.

You can only throw money at a problem for so long. Eventually there will have to be a fundamental change in how poverty is handled. And even though solutions will be cheaper in the long run, it will cost more in the short term to start them up and continue current aid until the programs can get into full swing. Budget makers cannot see past the current fiscal year. All they see is a "30%" increase in the budget for poverty/homeless aid and no immediate returns. For them it is a bad deal.

Expenses and needs are greater than income coming in.
We live in a country that doesn't allow salaries to be appropriated appropriately and allows the rich to get richer. Just think about it.
How many businesses are going overseas to hire cheap labor so that they can profit even more? The other problem is that we live in a country that promotes what people can't afford. Many poor people don't have enough food, but yet they'll rent a movie, buy pop, chips, or cigarettes, to keep sane. They'll buy baby disposable diapers instead of cloth ones. Or, they'll buy a big car to accommodate all of the family, but yet they don't have the money to pay for gas. One can only contribute so much money. Now, that I've joined the lower-income, as a retired teacher, I can't even afford to invite people over for dinner because I have to save the left-overs for myself for the next day. So, what happens? People don't visit you anymore because you are unable to cater to them. That's life!

Well, we also have to remember - there are THOUSANDS of people trying to scam our government for money. Welfare fraud, crack addictions, etc... I think that there is help for those who really want it in most cases.

I think we have low poverty in some areas due to lack of schooling/education and guidence.
