Your best bet is to talk to someone in housing and/or if your campus has an LGBT resource center. I was able to get into a single room (with my own bathroon) within a co-ed dorm by talking to people in housing. I know it might be hard to come out to someone in housing, but it'll help to have someone to talk to if some kind of situation arises.

I'm transitioning while in college, so I didn't feel comfortable rooming with anyone. If I was passable, I'd rather room with someone and deal with any issues that might come up, but that also depends on how liberal the campus is (or even the dorm itself).

You could live with roommates OFF campus (well, if you're considered an "independent' student I guess..some colleges make freshman live on campus) Or, you could request a private room, OR you can see if your college matches transsexual students together. These are just the options I'VE considered, because I myself am a transsexual. I'm a female to male, so I have to be a bit more cautious about living with guys for fear of rape and things of that nature, which I'm sure has happened to MtF transsexuals as well. So, I totally understand your worries.

1) Matters if you're pre or post

2) If post, you can be legally female in America, and dorm with the girls.

3) If pre, you can live in a girls' dorm so long as you have your own room and bathroom. Kinda a bonus, right? Some RAs have rooms like this, but it depends on the college.

4) Either way you can live offcampus.

5) Contact your school to see what they say.

Good luck.

I would personally talk to an adviser for the dorm. If you are uncomfortable with people not accepting you, don't tell, just apply for a room as the sex you appear to be. Unless the college has rules against this, there should be no problem.

Depending on what you registered as, pick that according to your dorm situation. If your a male gone female and your name is Nick, try living as a guy in the guys dorm OR explain that you are more comfortable in the womens dorm.
Oh, by the way are the men and women dorm seperated, if not, don't worry about it!!

My friend's solution was to get a medical single. I'm pretty sure that if you have the proper doc's note (in her case, I'll tell you right away, it wasn't for the trans-ness, but for anxiety), they usually give you the single at the normal price for a double. But I'm not sure. It might be something to look into though.

whatever you were born as, that's where you should go. you're not going to feel welcome wherever that may be. I personally don't think MtF should be using the female showers. Don't think that just because you paid for a pair of boobies that you're in with us either, so start having your period, then ask again... i wish i could sugar coat it for you but that just the way it is.

Get a private room or an apt off campus.
