Are Dyson vacuums really as wonderful as they're made out to be on television? I understand it's all part of a marketing strategy, but does anyone who owns a Dyson vacuum feel that they're any better than traditional vacuums? I know Dysons cost an arm and a leg, so I'm a little curious as to how well they work before I go out and purchase one.

I am an enthusiastic and proud Dyson owner. I have the original "animal" (purple) Dyson. It was the BEST purchase I have ever made!

When they say it doesn't loose suction, they are not kidding. For example, this weekend a Japanese Beetle landed in one of my light fixtures and I always use my vacuum to get rid of bugs. So I used the hose to suck the thing up out of the light by putting it around the bulb. And even though I had a full container, the suction was so strong on it that it actually caused the light bulb to deform! I was amazed even though I knew it was powerful, just didn't realize HOW powerful.

It does have some drawback, though. It's a bit bulky. Since it's a "canister" vac, it should be emptied into a wastebasket by taking it outside. After it's emptied, I would suggest banging it out.

But I will never own any other vacuum than a Dyson. I always thought when I have a home built that I would have a central vacuum system... But now, no way.

Even though you feel it's a bit spendy, keep in mind that a Kirby brand would cost a couple of thousand, and a Rainbow is also more expensive then the Dyson. Frankly, I don't feel that either of those brands even hold a candle to the Dyson.

I would also give you two pieces of advise if you do choose the Dyson. First, the purple "animal" one is worth the extra $50 because the attachment that comes with it is great even if you don't have pets (good for stairs and cars). And second, the one that has the extension tube that comes out the top of the handle would also be worth the extra (additional) $50 due to the convenience. It didn't exist when I bought mine, but would have gladly coughed up the extra dough for it.

Best wished!

PS, after you get it (I'm sure you will), add additional info to this to tell us what you think of it, ok?

The Dyson vacuum ROCKS! I am so thrilled with mine that I specifically went looking in Yahoo! Answers to see if anyone had asked about them. I wanted to share my experience. The Dyson is an engineering marvel, and should be named the 8th Wonder of the World. I needed to replace my dying Hoover bagless vacuum, and I'd been eyeing the Dyson for awhile. Because it's so expensive, I've held off on buying it. Finally, I decided to bite the bullet and get one. I bought the one designed for pet owners - the lovely purple model.

Here are my observations.
1) On hardwood or other hard surface floors, you only have to get "close" to the particulate matter. The suction is so powerful that the vacuum pulls nearby dirt in. No more sweeping the same spot over and over again.
2) There are rubberized corners at the front of the vacuum that serve to push dirt in front of the vacuum so that it can be picked up, rather than spread it out further, out of the cleaner's path.
3) The acid test: I use the vacuum attachments on my microfiber / ultrasuede upholstered furniture. This fabric is sueded, so it attracts cat hair like a magnet. But, the Dyson removes cat hair like a charm!
4) The vacuum's weight is balanced differently than any other upright I've used. It's a heavy machine, but the load is carried in a compact and balanced space, so it moves around almost like a self-propelled lawn mower. The vacuum head is also compact, so as to reduce the amount of effort it takes to push it around. The machine doesn't seem nearly as heavy as it really is. It also has a convenient handle topping the heavy part of the cleaner, which makes transporting it a breeze.
5) The power cord is extra-long, so I can vacuum my entire downstairs without moving it.
6) The extension wand fits down inside the retractable hose, which is a bit odd to get used to, but it makes for easy switches between using the carpet vacuum and the ancillary attachments. The hose is constructed of a very durable, yet flexible material. In fact, if you're not careful, if you completely occlude the vacuum opening, the hose collapses because the suction is so strong. Yet, the hose is so hardy ... no harm is done.
7) The house I just bought has off-white carpet throughout. The carpet looks brand-new, even though the house is 8 years old. When I was considering the house for purchase, I noticed a Dyson vacuum in the closet, belonging to the previous homeowners. That's what finalized my decision to get one.

You sound a lot like me. I'm very cynical about television commercials, and I rarely give out product endorsements. But, I was so pleased with this vacuum that I want to tell the WORLD! You can believe the commercials. James Dyson, the inventor, really did perfect the art of vacuuming. I think I read that he's fought several patent infringements, to protect his years of research efforts. This product is revolutionary, and I will never own another brand of vacuum cleaner! I've used my mom's Kirby and the Dyson whips it's heavy, clunky metal butt! If you're in the market for a vacuum cleaner, this is the one to buy.

Imagine the vacuum that parent vacuums teach their vacuumlets about when they want them to grow up right. That's a Dyson. It's like getting in a Rolls Royce, stepping on a Harley, listening to Jimi Hendrix - when you just instinctively by the sound and the feel that something is right. Dysons are beautiful, obedient, dirt-removal machines. If cleanliness really is next to godliness, you can bet the angels have Dysons...

I bought the purple Animal a little more than a year ago. It's the only vacuum I would ever buy again. It has given me NO trouble and suction is as good as the day I bought it. They have excellent customer service - my dog stole the curtains attachment the day I bought it & they offered to send me another one free, which was unnecessary as it did show up during the telephone call. Consumer Reports was way off the mark on this one. Dyson rocks!

Oh my god...what can I possibly say about the Dyson that hasn't already been said here? Especially, Falco's answer...it was spot on! I got my first Dyson about 3 weeks ago, and it has changed my life and my personality forever.

The first year ia great! After that no good. Save your money ! Ive cleaned filters no suction , now it turns off by itself. Vacuums are meant to last for an average of two years. Trying to send it back now.

Consumer Reports says they're no good. No suction. Pay for the marketing, but the cleaner doesn't suck.
