I am shy in front of my peers and definitely not very good at public speaking. Even though I am a valued member of academic groups (and top of my grade) ,I am usually not nominated as the leader. How can I improve my leadership/speaking skills?

One way to improve those skills is to make yourself go around before a meeting of whichever group is meeting and do what I call a "Meet and Greet". That means go around to each person that you can before the meeting, shake the person's hand then greet them (by name if you know it- if not then introduce yourself- "I'm ---- and you are?"), look them in the eye and let them know that you are glad they made it to the meeting. It's tough at first but with practice you will get better.

this is not an easy task unless you were lucky to be born a natural leader which you werent or you wouldnt be asking this question. The biggest trick of public speaking and leadership is to try and not show that you are scared of doing it, people will not follow someone who acts scared, as they are scared too but want to follow someone who is not so as scared as leaders get, they just do a good job of not showing it. Public speaking or even speaking in front of any group takes practice but eventually you will grow out of it. Many colleges offer classes in management/leadership skills, also most young leaders are selected upon their outgoing personalities instead of actual leadership skills. Be patient as time will change everything, good luck
