I lost the sound on my laptop. When I push the mute or volume button on the fron of the computer the volume level shows about half full but it won't let me raise ore lower the volume. It is as if it is permanantly muted but it says that it is not. The only sound I ever get is an occasional loud beep.

When I go to control panel and audio device it days that there is no audio device. I have been told to look at my device manager but I don't know where this is?

How do i inststall an audio driver and how do I know which one to install. I have a Dell Inspiron 6000.

What type of laptop do you have? Most laptop manafacturer's provide a website where you can troubleshoot the problem, ask technical questions, download drivers....

Possible reasons why your sound is not working:
1. Your audio drivers are corrupted
Solution: Uninstall driver and download and reinstall the latest one.

2. Your audio drivers are incompatible
Solution: Uninstall driver and download and reinstall the latest one.

3. Your audio drivers have been uninstalled uninstentionally
Solution: Reinstall the latest one.

4. Your audio device (hardware) has failed to initialize
Solution: Get a new sound card

5. Your audio device is malfunction
Solution: Get a new sound card

6. You have a program running that mutes your audio
Solution: Reboot PC and trace your processes.

7. Your audio device is disabled
Solution: Go to Device Manager and enable your device.

8. The volume controller on the side of your laptop is set to minimum.
Solution: Set volume up.

go to control panel for audio device see what is set.. open up speaker icon too see if all the mutes are not on .. each has a equalizer switch not just one ..

check the volume on media player if you are running any.

try mycomputer - click on control panel - select sounds and audio devices - increase sound on the bar by clicking on speaker volume.

have you tried checking the setting of for laptop audio? well, try refreshing it by doin' power cycle. it could be that you need to reprogram your audio settings there.

try re-installing windows. save EVERYTHING u have to disks for back up, just incase it deletes it.
