They can be frozen with liquid nitrogen and cut off. Research shows women get them more often than men and more middle aged people get them than other people. No evidence of overweight people being more prevalent.

I am not sure what causes them. I think mine is hereditary. I have had some removed from my neck twice. They come back after 10 years, not necessarily in the same spot. I also had some tiny moles removed from my cheeks. I have that done every ten years or so also. I won't say it is a painless procedure. They can be removed by laser. Each zap is like a tiny bolt of electricity going through your body. The sting only lasts a second. The amount of pain depends on how many you have to have removed. He removed the ones from my face rather quickly. The shock of it had my eyes tearing involuntarily. It was well worth it though.

Skin tags are passed down genetically; if your mother had them you're going to get them at some point in your life, it just continues family wise like that. The only thing to do is when you get them and they irritate you enough you can get them removed at your family physicians office. There is nothing that can be done topical or ingestion wise to prevent them.

Yes to JP...and Goddess, I've found cutting rather than liquid nitrogen worked best for me. Liquid nitrogen works on flatter moles...but skin tags and prominent moles need incision. Not much pain involved for a fairly prominent one to be cut is what made it easy to take.
Genetics is my guess. Mom and sister have them, too.

Nope. No one really knows what causes them, but I know overweight (please don't think I am saying you're fat, I'm not) people tend to get them more. They're probably genetic. Your MD can take it off, but it could grow back. It may go away on it's own. Don't try taking it off yourself, or putting nail polish or anything like that on it. It could cause nasty scars and infections.

my dermatologist said that if you wear polos that can cause them. I used to go to a private school so we'd wear polos and I had alot on my neck. You can cut them off with a pair of sterilized scissors though..and then a bandaid over it. It doesnt hurt.just feels like a pinch.

Have them cut off. It's relatively painless and an outpatient procedure. The doctor says that sometimes they can grow back, but in my friends' case they didn't. Idk if there's any oral meds that can take care of them.
