I believe that America will be worse off. If we back out of this war we will further prove the belief Osama Bin Laden came to after "Blackhawk Down" that Americans have no resolve when casualties are involved. We needed to go to Afghanistan. We needed to go to Iraq. Iran needed to feel pressure, as they are the head of state sponsored terrorism world wide.
Sorry to say that the addage "respect people and they will respect you" just doesn't fly in this world. Look at the 5000+ years of recorded history and see human nature on display. We are no different in our nature now than we were then. It is just that we are now an affluent and "civilized" culture. We believe that we are above such barbarism as war and that since we have reached this enlightened state, surely others will come running to be enlightened in the very same ways.
The plain and simple truth is that man has been at war since the beginning of our existence. It is in our blood. Diplomacy is a first action solution, but as talking to the bully at school rarely works there needs to be escalation to resolve stubborn issues.
It doesn't only exist in governments but in business and in neighborhoods. Human nature is this: We try to attain to something that is our ideal. When we either fail to attain this or someone with a different goal gets in our way, we react according to our personality type. A lot of us would just sit and stew and complain. Some of us get verbal and become media whores. The few rally others of similar character and thought behind them to take over those who oppose their views and goals. We are at a point right now where Muslim extremists have determined that we are in the way, the world is in the way, of them having Islam as the world religion. Proselytizing has either gone too slow or not worked or what and they are determined to bring Islam into rule through terrorism and fear. At least that is what the visible ones have shown, and since no one in the Muslim community has stood up since the first plane hi-jacking in the 70's through 9-11, London and Spain and into the present, we can only believe that the entire community is behind these militants.
As for our part in the solution, just because we have means and comfort doesn't mean that we have the ability to wipe out suffering by simply walking up to one less fortunate and telling them to stop being violent. How would that work for any of us to have a rich man tell us that what we have for a life is basically wrong? We would treat them as many of these hurting 3rd world countries do, with disdain and contempt.
We have tried to show the benefits of a free society established in a representative republic. The world has accepted it in large, but there are those who still want to have the central government dictate to the people how to live. As we have shown in the past, if this is done in a benevolent manner, we stay out of it. But when there is brutal oppression, genocide (as with the Kurd extermination in Iraq) and human rights violations, words and examples no longer suffice. Action must be taken to free people.
Whether there is gain to be had or not to be had from freeing a people should not be even a factor in us taking action. If there are oppressed people, we should offer assistance in any way we can. If there is a nation that is collaborating with terrorists, as it has been solidly documented about Saddam Hussein and Al-Qaeda, then we should take them out in the interest of our own national security, no matter whether there are oil profits that could be taken (and we still have not increased our oil consumption from Iraq, either).
Iran is the next issue to deal with now. Their people are tired of the oppression brought on by their cleric lead government in 1979. They want to be free. But they have a militant Islamic system of government that controls the military and assassinates any opposition. What are we to do? If their people ask us for assistance, should we just step up our negotiations with the very government that is murdering innocents? We did with Saddam Hussein for what... 12-15 years?
We were hit hard on 9-11 and that is why we went to war. Free societies do not breed the terrorism that came to us. If we back out now, those free societies that we have been working hard to establish will be overrun and we will in greater peril. We cannot back out.
Now... to bring down oil prices, why not get rid of the environmental restrictions that prohibit drilling in our own territory? Or the restrictions that prohibit the building of new and more state of the art refineries?
The very people who have shown weak intestinal fortitude as far as global politics and hard policy toward Middle Eastern Terrorist States are the same ones who would keep us reliant on Middle Eastern and South American oil because we can't get our own out of our own land.
And if we show our weakness by leaving the Middle East right now, how will we stop those oil rich countries from raising the oil prices anyway? They might lower them initially, but they will come back up again and we will be too weak to be able to do anything about it. If we complain about higher prices, all they would have to do is bomb someplace in America or an allied nation to slap us back into line, just like Spain before their last national election.

Politically:
Yes. Our allies will finally be happy that were out of the war. Some citizens will be happy (especially the familes of the soldiers, they can quite worrying) with it. We can finally let Iraq be there own country again, if we keep "aiding" them, they become more dependant, so when we finally leave them their country will just stall.
Militaristically (is that a word?):
Yes. Our fighting stlye and strategy is basically broadsword, ask questions later and blatently rude. Maybe if we stopped the war and refined our stategy to where we were "nicer" in obliterating (not the word I want to use) them, then maybe they will listen to us. What does this do, if we refine our tactics, make us look good in the global and political eye. Furthermore if we stop the war, less soldiers will die.
Economically:
yes. instead of spending alot of money on the war (we are now in some 8trillion dollars in debt) we could concentrate on filling an 8 trillion dollar hole and, as someone said before me look after our own people.
p.s. though this is based on methodical thinking, it is still just an opinion and not an absolute outcome
I might come back and edit this if I can think of any thing else...but for now...this should suffice.

Number one, the betterment of a nation cannot be attributed to the addition or removal of one factor. With that said, eliminating our involvement in the enterprise of war is a pacifist pipe dream, and does not necessarily lead to a better society. Would we have been a better society if we did not assist our European brethren in World War II to halt the genocide of Hitler? No, and in fact there may have been no US to preserve. Sometimes involvement in conflict does work for our betterment and those around us.
The question pertaining to war and our condition isn't whether we should eliminate involvement in wars. The true question is whether we should be more prudent and selective in choosing which battles to fight. For what distinguishes an opportunistic barbarian from a noble champion is the battles in which he chooses to partake in, and how he or the nation conducts themselves.
With that stated, the participation in Iraq cannot be deemed as an act of a noble nation because our intentions were less than noble, and now we are merely using moral proposition, such as free people from tyrannical regimes, as an after the fact rationalization of our occupation. What would be truly virtuous of us is to use the same military power to aid countries that are under the death grip of villainous leaders, where we don't stand to profit. Wars that are truly fought for altruistic purposes, and for the aims of defending the helpless solely, are the only true wars that ennoble man.

First of all, the world will never be perfect and there will never be world peace. Doesn't mean we can't try, but it just ain't gonna happen. Second, we can't stop the war. If we left Iraq it would be like telling a newborn baby to fend for itself. It's stupid. If we leave now, terrorism will be stronger than ever, and who do you think they'll attack once we leave? We haven't had a terrorist attack since 9/11, so we must be doing something right. Third, If Iraq goes back to being what it was before we invaded, how will the soldiers who have died, how will their deaths be honored? They would've died for a lost cause, just like Vietnam. We have to finish what we started. It's not ego, it's standing up for what's right. It's what separates us from them.

I think it would be because we'd be spending those billions of dollars on our own people, many of which need it desperately! There are places in the USA that are WORSE than the ghettos in Iraq. One of them is in the heart of Opelika, Alabama. I lived near there and the conditions people were living in were so far beyond awful it's pretty much impossible to describe properly here.
