We've been trying to build a house for sometime now. The problem is that we can't get the building permit from city hall. Everytime we go making the changes to the blue prints that they ask for they keep telling us that we need to make even more changes. Once we do what they say they come up with some other reason why they can't give us the permit. At one point they told us that our blue prints where totally illegal, why didn't she tell us that months ago?! Why can't they just find all the things that need correcting and tells us in one day so we have everything and not needing to go back hoping that that time we'll get it then come home empty handed needing to spend more money to hire a new plumber, electician etc. They told us at first that we can do the plumbing and electic ourselves then later they tell us we need to hire professionals. Did I mention this has been going on since the begining of this year?

You should consult a lawyer and definitely complain loud and clear to someone at city hall. I'm not sure why you think you are facing discrimination but if you think so, contact the local aclu in your area.

The is not discrimination, it is called beauracracy! Local government workers like that couldn't care less about you or anybody that they supposedly serve. They just want to do as little work as possible and get their paycheck. Everytime I have had to go to city hall for something, I usually get some lady with attitude who doesn't know anything about their job. I'm sorry for your trouble, that is why I never get working permits, the people that approve them couldn't care less about you or your project. I usually do the work myself and then get it approved later. If you own the house yourself, you can do whatever you want to it, just be careful and make sure you know what you're doing.

It could be discrimination, it could just be an extremely lazy and stupid bureaucrat.

Either way, go above this person's head. Ask to speak to her boss next time she gives you the runaround, and if she refuses or says her boss is not in, get their name and write a letter expressing your dissatisfaction. Talk to your City Councilor and tell him or her what's going on, as well. They can be great allies if they know your story. Write to your Mayor, and call the Mayor as well, telling the secretary you will speak to exactly what your name and situation is. If you know someone who works at City Hall this is the time to ask for a favor. Let the woman you've been taking your plans to know that you are going over her head, it might suddenly spur her to action.

If there's a newspaper or a columnist in your city known for bashing "hacks" or waste in the government, it might be a good idea to call them, too, and ask them to write about your case. If there is a neighborhood newspaper they might also want to write about it, or you could write about it yourself. Nothing gets a politician to get something done like bad publicity.

You've been patient for seven months, now it's time to get tough. Give 'em hell!

Where do you live???

Here's what you do. Get a white friend to go into the building permit office and see if the same thing happens. If they don't give the white person any grief, then you will know. If it is a case of discrimination then sue the sh*t out of them!

Good luck to you. I hope you can get this resolved! I hate this kind of crap.

If it is a poor excuse for them telling you this just to have you give up on it I think it is discrimination so I wud find time to find a lawyer on human rights or find the problem in the code inforforcement book on buildings

#1 Get yourself an attorney. You will need to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you are being discriminated against. You need to establish what kind of discrimination, whether it be racial, socioeconomical, etc. Document everything :times, dates, places, conversations. You may need some reliable witnesses also. Good luck.

Write to your legislators and address the problem succintly in letters and ask for help. Also see if your state has a department where you can complain/appeal city hall.

If you believe your facing discrimination, and it's not just them being assholes in general, find a lawyer, do some research and see what you can do. Most organizations will do whatever you want if you press them about discrimination.

Find out if anyone else had problems. If they did, it is not discrimination. You just may be sensitive. It is a pretty big deal now-a-days for business of gov to discriminate.
