It's not known for sure, but it's believed to be a chemical that is released from your brain that signals the start of labor. If you even remotely suspect that your water has broken, call your obstetrician or go to the emergency room. If your water has broken, you need to deliver the baby in a certain amount of time or get IV antibiotics to prevent infection to you and the baby. Good luck.
