people tend to leave the room during an advert break to make tea/coffee so the higher volume is so you can still hear when your not in the room and also so you can hear over the sound of the kettle

The volume on adverts is 20% louder than TV shows to get your attention. It's just an advertising strategy. I am forever turning the damn volume down at the commercials.

I was asking myself that just the other day and then I thought "My goodness I'm getting old!" They do it to grab attention and make you stop whatever your doing and look at the TV. But I don't like it when they shout on it, like that cillit bang advert where the bloke yells at you... I don't buy the stuff just because of that man!

deliberate ploy by the networks to make the viewers pay attention to the adverts, but also provides a method of screening out the add breaks on recordings, if only sony or someone would have the courage to build it into their recorders or equipment.

If they do have the volume louder to get you to pay attention, they are failing miserably, because it forces me to press the mute button and have a look at teletext news for 3 minutes

so that we will remember the mute button. they need to make a tv that keeps all volume the same but that is like asking for fuel economy.or government intelligence.

They're trying to get your attention so you'll go out and buy the product they are selling.

I know, isn't that annoying? It's because the edited sound level is different than the regular show.
