How old should a baby be before they try fish? My daughter is 14 months and is eating people food now. Can she have fish like cod or haddock?

Fish is EXCELLENT for children. The omega-3s are great for brain development which is crucial right now for your little girl! At the same time, it's best to limit fish to one meal a week for small children/toddlers b/c of Mercury.

Mercury levels can be high in fish so always look for "wild" on the label and avoid "farm-raised." If you get it at the seafood counter of your grocer, the fish monger can tell you what's wild and what's farm raised (most shrimp are farm raised)! Most allergies are shellfish, not fish-fish so I wouldn't concern myself over that.

Both our children love mahi mahi and cod which aren't as fishy as, say, salmon. Great on the grill for the summer, too!

Canned tuna is also low-mercury so a good lunchtime sandwich or pasta salad add-in!

G-d bless you and baby!!

I'm no expert, but I fed my son fish at that age. Cod and haddock should be just fine. If your child has shown some sign of allergies, probably talk to your doctor, but if she's eating everything else well...try it. Let them enjoy fish from an early age :)

On this one, I'd definitely ask your pediatrician. Our ped said to stay away from fish, especially those prone to mercury, until the age of 2 years old. One to keep away from mercury poisoning and two, to avoid food allergies. Fish is a major food allergy for people.

Good luck.

Maybe you should wait until she can talk so that if she's allergic to seafood then she could possibly tell you if her stomach is hurting or her throat or maybe she's feeling itchy and that way you can react a little bit faster as oppose to a lot of crying and jibberish that you could mistake for something else.

We've been giving our son haddock and salmon since he was about that same age with our pedi's go-ahead.
