Would a similar solution end the fighting between the Arabs and the Jews? I mean wasn't the fighting in Ireland about legal control of disputed territory dating back to a former war?

The issue in Northern Ireland is political not religious. The media, who is always looking for short cuts and not the whole story, calls the participants Catholics and Protestants.

The conflict is about whether the British territory (probably the wrong word) of Northern Ireland should remain British or should become part of Ireland.

The majority of people in Ireland are Catholics. The majority of people in England and Northern Ireland are Protestants. There are actually Catholics and Protestants on either side.

The terrorists on either side if the issue are not Christian in any sense of the word.

With love in Christ.

Well the fighting in Ireland isn't so much about religion as it was politics. The reason the Irish, who happen to be mainly Catholic, are fighting is because they want their island to be rid of English control. The reason the north is under English rule is because most in the north are Protestant like England. So really the fighting is about oppression and pride. England owning a portion of the island is symbolic of the centuries of injustice and bloodshed the Irish endured. Their tactics won't work with the fighting in Israel since that IS about religion. Both the Israelis and the Palestinians believe that it is their holy land and it's blasphemy to allow the other to live there.
Throughout the history of the world, religious wars have always been the longest and the bloodiest. Israel and Palestine could be at it for centuries to come.

Actually, the wealthy ENGLISH landowners went over to Ireland (which was a united country at that time) and STOLE the poor Irish folks land. They then began stripping the common people of money, rights and land. Those English landowners were PROTESTANT due to Henry VIII denouncing Catholocism because he was a very horny and sadistic man, who enjoyed beheading his 'former' wives'. He basically invented Protestantism as we know it today.

Anyway, the poor irish Catholics were forced to live in poverty while the English screwed them.

The only solution to the troubles in Ireland would be if the English Protestants moved out, and Ireland regained total control of the beautiful green island.

One side wanted to be ruled by the British, the other wanted to be ruled by Ireland.
So we did the logical thing, and let them rule themselves.

The fighting was much more even than in Palestine/Israel, Only when The USA stops funding the Israeli aggression, will there be a chance for peace. the problem is that the USA has refused to do that since the conflict began.

I'm sorry, who said that the 'war' had ended? There is still sectarian violence going on over there. The only reason it isn't reported in the news daily is that it doesn't touch the Mainland so therefore it isn't 'newsworthy'. People are still getting punishment beatings and the like. The IRA and the other Loyalist paramilitaries are still going strong over there!

The war has not ended, it seems to have been handed down through the generations. I think the plot has been lost now it is revenge. I think the Queen should take her troops out and spend Englands money on England.

Reading the other answers and you'd think it never stopped.

In my opinion three things were (are) critical towards resolution:
1. stop fueling the situation. If you can't buy bullets and bombs then you must talk.
2. stop teaching the young to hate each other. Let history be history and let the next generation decide upon their future.
3. invest your effort in regeneration, again shift focus to the future rather than the past.

So many people were killed and impoverished that finally EVERYONE got tired of the fighting. Also, yes that would probably work for the Jews and such too.
