In my program, we started out wearing gloves, gowns, masks, and goggles. By the end, people slacked off with all the protection and just wore the gloves.

Anatomy usually starts you dissecting the back -- probably because it is less "personal" and less disturbing when you see the cadaver face down. The first things you notice is the overwhelming smell of formaldehyde, which stings your eyes and nose. Just don't get too close!

A number of us felt grateful that people would be willing to donate their bodies. Our cadavers were generally pretty old (60+) and we hoped they had a good life. One cadaver had pancreatic cancer and was only in her 40s when she died. :( Overall, I think classmates would agree that we had feelings of respect and gratitude for the cadavers for their willingness to help further our education.

The shock of being with dead bodies eventually wears away. You name your cadaver (One was named Big Bertha -- yes, she was pretty large.). I still felt like it was tacky to make jokes about them.

When you study at the lab, make sure you bring a friend -- it's a little creepy being in a room with all the cadavers.

After being with the cadavers for a little while, things get back to normal. Normal conversations during lab, and hoping for a big steak dinner after lab.

I worked in a funeral home and the hardest thing emotionally is getting kids. To see an autopsy or watch an embalming isn't bad. Physically, it's slippery but with lots of other textures. The hardest thing to get over is the smell.

well i had to disect a frog and a fetal pig and an earthworm. all of which i thought were completly disgusting. they smell and feel nasty. i would think disecting a cadaver would be very hard because it is a human and also very nasty. all i can say is good luck!

Actually, from what I have been told, the cadaver doesn't feel a thing.

the first time could be really hard for you, be prepared to throw up and feel bad.. but just depend on you, if you want to do it, you can do it.
