well, some researcher has done an experiment.
Picking stocks:
1. the monkey, picking randomly
2. a financial analyst, picking CAREFULLY
The result is that sometimes the monkey beats the analyst and sometimes the analyst beats the monkey. They are about even.
As long as you spread out your risk by diversification and choose only reputable companies with good earnings, you should be fine in the long run.
