What makes you think they can't? Chickens can and do fly. Especially roosters. To keep them confined (and to cut down on flight, which uses up calories that farmers would rather convert to meat than muscle) chickens are kept in pens, or their wings are clipped, so they don't get much of a chance to exercise their wings.
Laying hens don't usually fly, because they are so fat, but they can if they have to. Have you ever tried to catch a chicken? They get airborne pretty quick to get out of your way!

Chickens can fly short distances and are known to roost in trees but since the majority of their food is on the ground that's where they spend most of thier time. Domesticated chickens are often too large to fly because they are fattened up for the slaughter.

chickens can fly, unless their wings and/or tail feathers are clipped, which is what people who keep chickens do to them to keep them from flying away.

paul s is the only one here with any sense they do not fly because their wings are clipped if you do not clip their wings they will fly away

cause their wings arent built for complete aerialdynamics. just for flapping and jumping.
